Attractive neogothic church in the centre of Lyon offering the traditional Latin liturgy. Mass in the ancient Lyonese rite is celebrated at 9:00 on Sundays followed by Grande Masse (a Missa Cantata) at 10.30 and Low Mass at 7:30PM.

I attended the Grande Messe which was pleasant, except that the Epistle and Gospel were read in the vernacular facing the people, the Credo was intoned from the sedilia, and Pater Noster sung by the congregation. I'm not sure why such things are necessary, especially given the current climate of liturgical 'improvisation' in the new rite. Perhaps they are legitimate Lyonese local customs.

Other things I found somewhat perplexing were the use of women cantors and microphones. There was no scarcity of men in the church at the Mass I attended (the church was packed), so why women were performing the chant I'm not sure. Also the church has a wonderful acoustic given its high vaulted ceiling and stone surfaces, so why microphones were used (often failing or being switched on half way through prayers) I do not know.
