Huge castle with a lovely courtyard 😊 also known as Engineer's Castle built for Paul the I. He was killed only 40 days after he moved into his newly built castle. In front of the castle is a monument of Peter the I on a horse (pay a close attention to the back leg of the horse if you are close to the monument). In the old days there was a protection ditch around the castle, but now it has been all filled in. You can see the outlines of the protection ditch by the bridge, which is no lo get over the water, but on solid ground 😁 inside the courtyard there is a sculpture of Paul the I. In the past in 19th century it housed Main Engineering School. At the moment it houses Russian Museum with Portrait Gallery. In the front facade looking down from the sides of the main archway to the ditch you can see little caving with sculptures inside. If you make a wish and tiss a coin to the soldier and it sticks eitjitr falling into the ditch, then the wish will come true ❤️

Unfortunately the Castle was closed due to public holiday and naval celebrations but from the outside it is very impressive. It was built between 1797 and 1801 by architects Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bazhenov as a residence for Emperor Paul I. But he was assassinated in his bedroom in the castle just 40 days after moving in. The Castle is surrounded by the waters of the Moika River, the Fontanka River, and two specially dug canals, transforming the castle area into an artificial island.
