The market offers a vibrant and authentic glimpse into daily life in Belgrade. This bustling open-air greenmarket brings together people from all walks of life, navigating rows of colorful stalls in a lively and spirited atmosphere. Fresh produce, artisan cheeses, homemade kaymak, wild mushrooms, herbs, natural honey, meats, fish, and handmade goods are found in abundance. Many stalls are run by the farmers themselves, and the difference in quality and flavor is easily noticeable. The tradition of touching, smelling, and sampling the produce adds to the charm of the experience. The dairy hall stands out as a hub for traditional Serbian delicacies such as Užice prosciutto, duvan čvarci, and a wide variety of cheeses made from cow, goat, or ewe milk. Most items are available for tasting, and the cleanliness of the stalls often reflects the quality on offer. During the winter months, the tiled floor can become slippery, so caution is recommended. Fridays bring the widest selection of fresh seafood, with wild and river fish sourced from the Danube and Sava. These offerings are known for their freshness and variety. Surrounding the market are several cafés, bakeries, and specialty shops that round out the experience. Wood-fired bread, traditional burek, and freshly brewed coffee are all within reach, making the neighborhood a pleasant stop for a post-market break. The Market is more than just a place to shop. It is a cultural landmark full of character and community spirit, and remains one of the city’s most cherished gathering spots.

This is a great place to see all sides if Belgrade and to get some delicious fresh local food at a fraction of supermarket prices. I really wish we hadn't lost this type of market in Ireland because it's a great way to connect with your food and the the people who grow it. I've been here mostly in summer so the selection of fresh fruit and veg is outstanding. There are lots of markets like this one around Belgrade, I recommend you stop by especially if you have cooking facilities where you're staying.

One of the best ways to learn about the cost of living in a country is to go wander around inside a market place. This one located near Nikola Tesla Museum is huge with more than a hundred stalls selling all kinds of stuff from fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, bits, bread, flowers, clothing, accessories, etc. I have come to the conclusion that Belgrade is cheaper than a lot of other European cities to live in. Cheaper than even some Asian cities.

Kalenić Green Market – Lively but Lacking Soul 🌿🛒

Kalenić Market is one of the oldest and liveliest markets in the city, but over time, it has lost some of its charm. While it still has that authentic, bustling energy, it often feels too messy and chaotic, lacking the warmth and uniqueness that make a market truly special.

The biggest issue? Too many traders, not enough real producers. A good market thrives on the passion of those who grow and create, yet here, you get the sense that there’s more commerce than connection. Instead of finding hidden gems and handcrafted Serbian specialties, the selection leans more towards generic goods that lack the emotional appeal of true local products.

It’s somewhere between a flea market and a proper green market—there’s always something interesting to buy, and it’s never a wasted visit, but it’s also never quite it. Could it be better? Absolutely. With a stronger focus on local farmers, artisans, and authentic Serbian flavors, Kalenić could reclaim its place as a must-visit market. Until then, it remains an almost good experience. tip? fish place, gourme mushrooms and french cheese place Good...
