This was an unexpected treat, given the dilapidated state of the entire city. I was surprised that such a scruffy town could still contain such a precious gem. WHAG contains an impressive collection of classical, historic and contemporary South African art. Entrance was free, but no photography was allowed. It would have been great if the gallery shop sold a book containing highlights from the collection, since little information about the artworks are provided (and visitors aren't allowed to take pictures). Furthermore, it would have been lovely to support the gallery through an operationsl tea garden. WHAG is a must for any art-lover somehow finding themselves in...
Read moreContemporary art and Dutch masters in the middle of the most desolate place in South Africa. It was like finding water. A half day is needed to appreciate the permanent collection and the changing African artists. The film center and community focus makes this a very avant-garde program in a very modern facility. The lack of commercial input gives a purest perspective on the experience. No distraction from the art. The programming and facilities should be international examples for what is possible in areas where industry or nature have not already created incentives...

Managed by the most wonderful, caring and passionate staff, they were extremely welcoming and happy to see us and made our visit even more special. Unfortunately the fabulous tea room did not survive COVID 😭😭, so no delicious tea and scones. Still an extensive and exciting art collection well laid out and a pleasure to visit.
