동아시아가 식민사회에서 선진국을 향해 빨리 발전한 이유를 유교정신에서 찾는이가 많다. 그 논리면 김일성 왕국을 건설하고 유교적 호칭인 어버이 수령을 외치는 북한은 벌써 선진국이 되어야 한다.

인정하기 싫지만 동아시아의 발전 모델은 개발독재, 더 정확하게 표현하면 일본 군국주의적 발전 모델이다. 박정희가 일본 군국주의에 잠시 몸답았고, 싱가포르의 이광효가 일본점령시 일본의 시스템에 감동해서 자기도 이런 나라를 만들고 싶다고 한 애기는 유명하다. 대만은 일본 군국주의 발전 시스템을 한국과 다르게 거부감없이 받아들인 나라고, 제일 마지막으로 발전하고 있는 중국은 싱가포르와 한국의 개발독재 발전 모델을 벤치마킹했다고 공언하고 있다.
