Walked to the headland where there are beautiful wild flowers, art installations, picnic tables, benches, and drinking water taps situated on a gravel and rock path along the coast and finally to the Tower of Hercules. We bought tickets online for midday. Such incredible foresight back in the 18th century means we still have this Roman Tower now encased to protect it.
The Tower of Hercules is the only fully preserved Roman lighthouse that is still used for maritime signalling. The Tower of Hercules was restored in the 18th century in an exemplary manner, which has protected the central core of the original Roman monument while restoring its technical functions. It is testimony to the use of lighthouses in antiquity as the Romans mastered so much in such early history. The Tower is also proof of the continuity of the Atlantic route from when it was first organised by the Romans, during a large part of the Middle Ages, and through to today.
UNESCO world heritage site, and rightly so!
An absolute joy to visit.

Read moreIt is essentially an ancient light house from Roman era. It is exceptionally well maintained and even works till day which is quite amazing. Mondays have free entry. There are open lawns around this place and many sculptures are there. Souvenirs can be bought from local vendors. Do carry a water bottle with you as there is no source of drinking water nearby. You can also see a giant trumpet which was used to alert the town if any enemy ship was spotted from the tower. View from to top is amazing. There is also an amazing sheltered beach nearby which is quite happening . It si also UNESCO World Heritage site and well protected. Very close is the aquarium which is not very fancy but informative. I really liked the way seals were playing happily. Be prepared to walk a lot. I also met a bagpiper who was really playing well and people were very generous with thier tip to him. Many foreigners were flocking the place. There is no restroom nearby so be aware. The top of the tower becomes a bit congested due to the crowd hence...
Read moreBeautiful lighthouse, oldest working lighthouse in Europe. Fantastic to visit by day and by night. By day you can climb up its stairs and get a great view of the ocean and by night, you can witness its beam of light warning ships to be aware of Galicia's "coast of death" or "Costa da morte". This is free at night and a must see! Parking is much easier at night and although it looks "closed" many of Coruña's natives go for a stroll up to the base of the tower. Wear flat shoes with a rubber sole, the road is made of cobble stone and not for heels or shoes with a slippery sole. It is pretty well lit at night. If you go by day, purchase your tickets online or at the base of the road up to the tower in a trailer-like office near the parking area on the left. Many people make the mistake of walking all the way up to the base of the tower only to be told the tickets are to be bought at the bottom. You can also buy online. Inside the tower is a sort of museum telling you about the history and legends about...
