Starting at the paid entrance was actually a plus. The staff gave us a map and excellent advice for the route. There's also a shop there to buy water before you start.
We hiked with our 17-month-old in a toddler backpack carrier. Our advice: pack light, wear breathable clothing, but don’t skimp on proper hiking shoes! The trail was said to take 1.5 to 2 hours, and we walked at a pretty steady pace and completed it in just over an hour.
We found a very small shaded area after the main lookout point to have a quick bite, but there aren’t really any places to rest along the way. If you can, take your time, stop often, and enjoy the stunning views and waterfall.

I have been coming here for years and more recently, the city council is charging a steep 4 Euros to allow visitors to walk through nature. You do get a helmet, but personally I find it rather overkill for the type of activity.
Whilst the city council may seem overly safety conscientious, it is rather superficial.

Lucky we consulted with the tourists information about when to go, as it was very hot during the day, so we went around 1800...we could have gone a bit earlier as the way down is shaded and only the way up is not. Wierdly, the pasarella tourists office will try to sell you insurance and an helmet to walk this trip... We did not take that... I didn't see any one with a helmet down by the river...
