It is an easily navigable route up from the Berlin road at the end of Mediterraneo. The first few hundred metres are climbing roads behind English pubs and typical Benidorm hotels. Once you get past those there are some residential high rises. Once you get past those, there are some very nice designer houses with what must be amazing views out over the bay! The route is on roads, with very little pedestrian pavement, but as there isn't much traffic going up or down, it feels very safe.
It is quite a steep climb, with maybe a certain medium level of fitness. In the heat, it can be quite draining, and it sis recommended to take some cold water with you; there is a nice fork in the road between Tokio and Taywan roads which is convenient for a water and picture break before completing the last quarter.
There is a small seating area just below the cross, and then some very uneven stone steps as a last climb to the cross itself. The views are amazing, but if you arrive at the same time as other people then you may have to wait while they clamber around the cross before you an get an unhindered picture.
It can get a little breezy up there, which is great for cooling down, but it is easy to lose loose-fitting hats!
There are other "mirador" scenic areas located in the same area, a lot lower down; if you think that you're unable to make it to the cross, consider doing these; if you've made it to the cross, then these others may seem like an anticlimax.
The route down is a lot easier, though it's still quite tough on any joints like knees and hips that may not be 100%.
Google maps indicates that it's a 40+ minute walk; it can be done in less than that - this 59-year-old did in in 25 minutes, though I am...
Read moreWalking up to Benidorm Cross isn't easy, nor for the faint hearted. You need to have a decent fitness level, as well as lots of water, as it can get really hot. The road leading up can be steep and winding, so little stops to catch your breathe are recommended. If starting out from the streets of Benidorm, its easy to take the wrong road, as we did, which set us back nearly an hour, having to turn back on ourselves. Once your closer to the top it flattens out, before you reach the narrow path and steps up to the platform of the cross. The ground is uneven with lots of exposed sticking up natural rock, so just be careful walking. Not an ideal walk for young children, buggies or push chair's. Once at the top, the views are fantastic of Benidorm and the surrounding mountainous landscapes and the Mediterranean Sea. Walking up can take...
