Sanctuary of Arantzazu — Attraction in Oñati

One of the most beautiful places in the world! I live in the mountains of Colorado so it’s hard to be impressed sometimes visiting other areas. We stayed for 3 days and I wish we had more time honestly, the entire area has amazing road/mtb cycling as well as hiking. The staff are very accommodating and friendly and the food was great! We had almost 100 people there for a work function and they handled everything amazingly well.

We didn't go inside the sanctuary, but the architecture is interesting to look at from the outside. It's in a very scenic spot with great views. There are many hikes that start from this place. We did the accessible Gomitzegi walk, which was pleasant and very well constructed but it was hard to find the start of the walk. Impresionante Santuario, dicen los lugareños que al pastor Rodrigo de Balzategi se le apareció la Virgen sobre un espino y éste, asombrado, le preguntó: «Arantzan zu?» (¿Tú, en un espino?). Luego siguieron los siglos de devoción, de peregrinación, de arte y de cultura. El monasterio sufrió incendios de forma casual o intencionada en repetidas ocasiones, teniendo que ser reedificado otras tantas veces. Las obras del actual Santuario comenzaron en 1950, y estuvieron dirigidas por los arquitectos Sáenz de Oiza y Laorga. La gran obra de Oteiza en la fachada Entre los elementos a mencionar se encuentran la fachada de la basílica, en la que destacan sus tres torres de forma puntiaguda que hacen honor al espino, la Piedad y los 14 apóstoles. Estas dos últimas, obras de Jorge Oteiza. La entrada y su impresionante interior Tras cruzar las puertas de hierro, obra de Eduardo Chillida, la y el visitante descubre un imponente retablo mayor de 600 m2, concebido en madera y policromada por Lucio Muñoz. En el centro del retablo, se encuentra el camarín de la Virgen María del S. XIII, cuyos murales fueron elaborados por Xabier Egaña. Por último, tenemos las vidrieras que iluminan el espacio, realizadas por Xabier Álvarez de Eulate.
