Located in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, the Basílica de Sant Miquel is a stunning escape from the summer heat — cool, calm, and peaceful inside, offering a refreshing contrast to the busy streets outside. The architecture is beautiful, with a richly decorated Baroque altar, dramatic vaulted ceilings, and massive religious paintings lining the walls. It’s one of those places where every detail invites contemplation. 📜 Interesting fact: This basilica is one of the oldest churches in Palma, originally built on the site of a former mosque shortly after the Catalan conquest of Mallorca in 1229. It was later reconstructed in the Baroque style, which explains the elaborate gold-plated altarpiece and expressive sculptures. If you're exploring Palma and need a break — both physically and spiritually — this is a perfect stop.

It is one of the oldest churches in Palma, built even before the Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca. In 1236, after Jaume I of the Kingdom of Aragon conquered Palma from the Moors, the church was established by converting a pre-existing Islamic mosque into a Catholic place of worship. The exterior features a Gothic style, while the interior is decorated in the Baroque style. Above the entrance stands a sculpture of Archangel Michael. It is also a place of devotion to Santa Catalina Tomàs, a saint from Mallorca, and visitors can see relics related to her inside the church.

One of the oldest churches in Palma, dating from 1229, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Later re-modelled in the Gothic style in the 14th C, and again extended and enlarged in the Baroque style in the 17th C. Look out for the impressive entrance porch dating from 1398, featuring a statue of Raymond Llull, and in the interior, the sanctuary dedicated to the Patron Virgin of Palma, "la Mare de Déu de la Salud". The church was upgraded by the Pope to the status of a Basilica in 2019, the symbol of which, in the form of the red and yellow umbrella ('umbraculum') may be seen to the right of...
