"Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa" in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, known as La Recova, exerts a great fascination on visitors not only for being a historic building, an example of a very versatile architecture, but for being the municipal market of the city. La Recova, built on the remains of the Recova Vieja, called the Royal Palace, is a neoclassical colonial-style building, the work of the architect José Enrique Marrero, the same who built the basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, patron saint of the island. After the entrance arch, you enter three large courtyards, a central one in classic Spanish style and two lateral ones dominated by the "Mudejar" style tower (a continuation of the Moorish style). Entering the arcades, the attraction is great for the riot of colors of the flower stalls and even more so for those of tropical and other vegetables and fruit. And again: meats and fish, cheeses, all kinds of breads, fresh pasta, desserts, ice creams, herbalists, artisan products. Always crowded cafes are typical.

A Taste of Tradition at Mercado Ntra. Señora de África Discover the heart of Tenerife at Mercado Nuestra Señora de África, a vibrant hub where locals and travelers alike bask in authentic Canarian culture. Its striking architecture beckons you into a world brimming with fresh, local produce and the day's best catch, straight from the Atlantic. Amidst the lively banter of friendly vendors, you'll find an array of stalls offering everything from exotic fruits to artisanal cheeses. Don't miss the chance to savor traditional tapas at one of the quaint bars nestled within the market, providing a perfect pause to your bustling market adventure. This market isn't just a feast for the senses; it's a warm, communal experience that embodies the spirit of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A visit here promises not only a taste of the island's finest offerings but also a genuine connection to the soul of the Canary Islands.

Really fantastic market and absolutely worth a visit. We were on a cruise and only had a day in Tenerife and we were glad we visited. Beautiful historic building with food and produce stalls lining the perimeter, and a craft market in the central area. You can buy ready to eat treats, gourmet spices etc, and fresh produce & meat. You’ll find locals buying stuff so it’s a real market. Downstairs are a few more stalls, and also the fish market- and it’s amazing! It’s not huge but it’s lively and packed with fresh fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and more. Between the fish stalls are casual restaurant counters where you can eat freshly prepared seafood dishes, while watching the bustling market all around you. We found a space and enjoyed a seafood tapas lunch with delicious Spanish Albariño wine. Highly recommended!

The market is quite close to the harbor and the opera building. You could say that the market is pretty ordinary and I didn't find anything special, you can definitely give up on entering the city at all. You can park in the covered parking for fee, you can get free 2 hours parking with eating in restaurants, worth asking if they give before sitting down, I realized that not everyone gives a refund. Bar Cafetería La Terraza, certainly gives free parking, in any case parking costs the order of half a euro per hour, so it is not bad anyway. The clock tower is at the entrance to the market. The first and indoor floors have the fish market floor above the fruits and vegetables and several restaurants, this floor is partly covered.

The market offers various products to sell, including foodstuffs, spices, porcelain products, bracelets, etc. It has 2 levels, the lower one is less interesting. The people are kind and helpful, some of them can speak english pretty well and explain everything but those ones who can't really do everything as well to make you understand what they want to let you know. Parking in the neighborhood is pretty heavy so I recommend you to choose the underground garage. I know it's a dream but only 4 stars because I've found it more authentic if it's loyal to its name and there are Africans to sell their hand made stuffs.
