Pudukada Street Food World — Attraction in Colombo

This place doesn't get started until about 7pm at night, and isn't really rockin' until after 8pm. Located in a Muslim neighborhood the crossroads of Meeraniya Street and Abdul Hamud Street can be crammed with people from all over Colombo descending for affordable, delicious, authentic Sri Lankan flavors. I'm ashamed I couldn't catch the names of some of these incredible dishes, many of which consist of grilled chicken, fish, or even beef.

Bawa's is a long-standing establishment selling flavorful biriyani rice and spiced, grilled chicken. Another special shout-out to the friendly people at a food stand called Dekh Bhai Kedai, located just outside the main crush of foot traffic south of Meeraniya on Abdul Hamud and across the street from Hotel Fazool Nana. Grilled chicken with roti packs a powerful spicy punch, but the delicious curry-soaked roti dish served with grilled chicken is just as flavorful (though differently spiced) without as much spice heat. They serve bottled water or can get you sodas as well, and are friendly and able to converse to a limited extent in English. Truly authentic food at fantastic prices. Our group of five ate to beyond satisfied on less than $20.

It had been a long time since I last visited this street food spot, especially after hearing mixed reviews in the past. But last Sunday, I decided to give it another try—and I’m so glad I did! The crowd was smaller than before, and the atmosphere felt welcoming and safe for the whole family.

The BBQ was absolutely delicious, and the other dishes I tried were just as tasty. Prices are affordable, portions are generous, and the vendors are now friendly and polite (a big change from before!).
