Länsmuseet Gävleborg — Attraction in Gävle kommun

The museum is free – and an uexpected gem in a large villa-looking mansion, a few hundred metres from the railway station. You can head here for your introduction to Gävle. It covers the regions of Gästrikland and Hälsingland.

There are small sections with modern art, some 18th-19th century art, and a local historical/archæological section. All of these are easy to get through wihtin an hour.

More unusual, there is a section with traditional textiles and embroidery.

The most impressive feature was a room with virtual reality 3D screening of an old Hälsingegård – the 2-storey farmhouses of southern North Sweden, which are UNESCO listed. You get to use a VR helmet and can navigate your way through the farmhouse or select a mystery trip with tasks, essentially an educational computer game. Allow 15-30 minutes for this, especially for children.

The shop has remakes of colourful early 20th century commercial posters and postcards, as well as many books and artefact copies. The café area is inviting with old sofas and lounge chairs.

I love it here! There are plenty of things to see in terms of history and art in Gävleborg. I can easily spent hours here. I love that the art section is well-curated based on period and theme. The entrance is free, which is a big plus. The museum store is well-stocked, sadly it's difficult to find a Gävle postcard. Regardless, it's a must visit in Gävle.

Ett av de bästa museer jag besökt. Här kan man gå i timmar. Här kan du se Björkebåten, Sveriges äldsta farkost som inte enbart utgjordes av en urholkad stock utan är vidareutvecklad med sidor av furuplank.

Här finns massor av föremål från stenålder, bronsålder och järnålder fram till vår dagar. Snyggt och pedagogiskt utformat.

I en monter står ett brev, en flaskpost. Det var ett levnadsöde som grep mig djupt. Brevet var ett nödrop från ett sjunkande skepp på Nordsjön.

Strax innan de följer fartyget i havets djup i april 1811 skrivs brevet av den 21-årige Carl Johan Sehlberg. "I nöd, är nära att sjunka, eftersom briggen sprungit läck för två dagar sedan, och då vattnet alltjämt stiger trots alla försök att hindra det, ha vi nu kommit mycket nära den sista stunden i våra liv, varför vi nu ber honom eller henne, som kan komma att finna detta brev, att meddela allmänheten om vår olycka."

Här finns också berättelsen om Kata och arbetarna från Ljusne, en berättelse om hur patroner och baroner levde sitt burgna liv fjärran från arbetena som slet i armod.

Utställningen om Ahlgrens bilar blev också en rolig historielektion av ett ovanligare slag.
