A must visit.
A lot of effort has been put into this castle, the museum, shop and the Café to make it a modern and friendly place to come to and to justify the rather uncommonly high entry fee.
An indeed, kids friendly activities, medievally clothed staff and a worthy price for the treasure hunt, and free guided tours made this a nice museum.
The permanent exhibition was made well and used a lot of media and original pieces, but, in my opinion, failed to break down the whole history of this castle to its meaning for Swedish history.
The temporary (?) exhibition on Gustav Wasa was disappointing using some totally out of place light installation and quite a bit of text, impossible to read when with kids. It had some critical aspects on the person, but again it was hard to find this one take home message.
The back in the 80s rebuilt dining and living rooms failed to transport authenticity and looked like from a medieval B-Movie.
The whole architecture saved the day thou and it was enjoyable to visit the actual...
Read moreKalmar's castle is a must to visit! Not only it is possible to visit the fortifications but the inside rooms have been reconstituted as good as possible despite the place being ransacked through history. The exhibitions rooms and numerous panels give a good insight about Kalmar and Sweden's history during the Renaissance Era. More often than not, you can see guides and actors in period costumes, these people incarnating their roles of royalty and servants to perfection. The personal is more than helpful and several languages are spoken to help tourists (English, German and french, from the top of my head). There are also activities for children throughout the museum and outside during summer. Some very interesting temporary exhibitions are shown, the current one (summer 2018) being a reconstitution of Leonardo da Vinci's incredible machinery. A great place for history lovers! As a last point, a fair warning: do plan to dress yourselves warmly when visiting the castle in winter. The contrary...
Read moreA very lovely destination especially for those keen to learn more about Swedish history. For those familiar with Allt för Sverige, Kalmar Castle was part of the 2019 show. The cafe is very lovely - the atmosphere and building itself. One very disturbing experience - a man accosted me and my husband saying we British people were taking over Sweden. The only problem is that neither of us is British. Of course there’s A LOT wrong with what he did but ... my husband is born and bred Swedish. The man’s actions were EXCEPTIONALLY offensive and it’s particularly off putting as many non-Swedes come here to learn more about Sweden... not to be insulted and yelled at. Fortunately, cafe staff were very apologetic and kind. From what they said, he is a frequent visitor and has insulted others before. I hope this does NOT happen to anyone else so something must be done. The castle is too beautiful and historic a place to be tainted by such inappropriate behavior. There’s too much here to learn and enjoy....
