This is the cable car service between Grindelwald terminal and Eigergletscher station, introduced in 2020. Journey time is 20 mins. This forms part of the route between Interlaken Ost to Jungfarioch (Top of Europe). Journey time to Jungfarioch from Interlaken Ost via this route is the fastest which is 1.5 hrs. This is a continously operating cable car system. So there iz a car any time. Pls check operating hours beforehand. To take cable car you need to take Grindelwald bound train (when coming from Interlaken ost) and get down one station before grindelwald which is grindelwald terminal. From here, cable car goes directly to eigergletscher station which is located in close viscinity to Kleine Scheidegg (Kleine scheidegg is the final station for trains coming via lauterbrunnen or grindelwald. Whatever the route taken, all trains end here. You need to board another train from here to go up to Jungfarioch. This train stops at Eigergletscher station to pick passengers coming via cable car). Taking cable car will let you skip part of the train journey when travelling via grindelwald. So, this cable car starts in a station close to grindelwald and ends at a station near Kleine scheidegg. Via train you go from grindelwald to klein scheidegg while cable car goes from grindelwald terminal station to eigergletscher station. Cable car ride is 20 mins and journey time is shorter this way. This is a continuous cable car line where cars run one after the other so no queues. Pls check operating hours beforehand. Your ticket to jungfarioch is valid for any route. But when booking online tickets, MAKE SURE TO SELECT BETWEEN TRADITIONAL ROUTE AND NEW ROUTE CORRECTLY based on how you travel. New route is cable car. It ends up in eigergletscher station. So you board onward train at eigergletscher station. If you select new route when buying tickets and later decide to go by train instead of cable car, you end up in kleine scheidegg instead of eigergletscher. Then you board onward train at the wrong station. At the boarding point of the third/final train there are seperate queues for those who have reserved seats and for others. If you select new route (cable car) and end up in Klein scheidegg travelling by train, your ticket QR will not open the gate at reserved seats queue. So you will be treated as a passenger without seat reservation. For your QR to be valid you need to board train at eigergletscher station. Under seat reservation, no seat number is given. You will be directed to a seperate queue and board first. You can sit anywhere. If the train is full, those who have not reserved the seat may have to wait for the next train. So IF YOU ARE TAKING CABLE CAR UP OR DOWN, SELECT NEW ROUTE FOR THAT JOURNEY. Still your ticket is valid...
Read moreHORRIBLE! RUDE STAFF. OVERPRICED. Although we enjoyed some of the views, we expected way more out of the train ride to the top. It goes through the tunnel with no views and over priced at that. There was zero visibility out of the windows at the top leaving us with the only option of eating and shopping, very disappointing. The windows should be maintained with heat to ensure clear views during snow season.
TO MAKE THINGS WORSE - The Operator at the glacier station pushed myself and my wife rudely when our tickets did not scan and we attempted to enter via accessible lane AT THE INSTRUCTION OF ANOTHER STAFF. She came out of her office and without saying a SINGLE word, just pushed us back - PHYSICAL ASSAULT! Not cool. No apologies when I confronted her saying you can’t push us like that. I have attached picture. Shame on you lady - karma will bite you in time. Universe has its ways. What goes around comes around. There is no need to put your hands on anyone unless we did something wrong intentionally or physical harmed you. My manners and morals did not allow me to put my hands back on you, so count your blessings for that.
THE EMPLOYEES IN GENERAL ARE VERY RUDE! THEY HAVE NO MANNERS, ACT LIKE THEY ARE BEING FORCED TO WORK, AND NEED TO BE BETTER TRAINED.
From the front ticket counter to the operators, they are bunch of idiots. Not to make this review longer, but the front ticket counter agent said you need to get a ticket number to be helped, I told him the printer is out of paper and would not print one. The guy at the counter said then go see another agent - really? What a moron! And the lady at the next counter went on to lecture us about the same! Wow! Zero respect and gratefulness for customers. Must be nice.
THERE IS MORE! On our return trip, we witnessed a lady being fined CHF 25 on the train ride for having her foot on the empty seat across from her. No warning! She was tired and went to sleep. Clearly she was not trying to make it dirty. UNACCEPTABLE WAY TO TREAT THE TOURISTS. SCAMMERS.
TO MGMT: MANDATE YOUR STAFF TO LEARN TO RESPECT CUSTOMERS REGARDLESS OF THEIR COLOR AND ETHNIC BACKGROUND OR DON’T TAKE THEIR MONEY. WHAT A SHAME.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING EIGER EXPRESS ALTOGETHER AND GOING ON ANOTHER LOCAL CABLE CAR AND TRAIN RIDES. WE WILL...
Read moreNew addition to the trip to Jungfraujoch. Previously you only had the option of taking a train ride from Interlaken or Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch. Now you can take the Eiger express/gondola from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg or Eigergletscher and then train from there to Jungfraujoch. So half of your trip is using gondola ride from Grindelwald and half in train. Please note that if taking train from Grindelwald, it leaves from Grindelwald Grund station while gondola leaves from Grindelwald terminal station (which is also a train station). Distance between these two stations is over 1km and there is elevation, so if limited mobility, you should take the train from Grindelwald Grund, ride 1 stop to Grindelwald terminal and then take the gondola. Eiger express was just amazing experience. The biggest cable car/gondola that I have experienced in my life. Can fit more than 20 people, full length glass, 360 degree views. You can see the entire village of Grindelwald, get super close to north face of Mt. Eiger and see a ton of natural beauty. We went on a Saturday during peak summer and we don’t think seat reservations are really needed, even on days with good weather, like the website says. There was plenty of room. Overall an amazing and unique experience. Highly recommended to do once...
