In June 2023, my partner and I did the 5 Lakes Hike in Zermatt. It’s promoted as one of the most popular hikes in the Swiss Alps, and for good reason! When we visited in early June, the second lift between Sunnega and Blauherd was closed. This meant that to start the official trail, we had to climb a very steep hill for 40 minutes—so just be prepared for that if the lift is out of action.
Once we were at the top, the remainder of the hike was relatively easy and downhill for the most part, with only a moderate elevation gain towards the end. The views, however, are all worth the uphills, as they are absolutely stunning. You’ll hike past five beautiful lakes, but the standout lake for us was Stellisee.
The trail is very well-signposted, so it’s hard to go wrong! Simply follow the well-maintained trail that takes you past Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee, and Leisee. The hike takes about 3 hours to complete, and there are plenty of places to stop and take in the epic views.
I would highly recommend the Zermatt 5 Lakes Hike to anyone visiting Zermatt. It's a beautiful hike that's just the right level of difficulty to not become arduous. Keep an eye out for the very cute...
