Magnificent sunrise views and 360 degree sight of the surrounding mountains and sea. Absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous views.
Highly recommended if you stayed overnight in Jiufen and want to get away from the suffocating crowds. Warning: it's pitch dark but I survived with my phone torch. Started my climb at 4.45am and it was getting lighter, so I didn't need the torch a few minutes in.
If you'd like the full sight of sunrise I'd recommend starting earlier at 4.30/4.15am! Note that the road is well paved but slightly uneven - might be a challenge in wet conditions. Check the forecast.
At the top there was only one other Taiwanese uncle whose slow and steady climb put me to shame... And this seems like a popular morning exercise route for the Taiwanese elderly 😂
On the way down I met many friendly locals; one even showed me Taipei 101 in the distance! Do say hi!
It was tiring as it's a continuous upward climb, but it's definitely highly recommended - I'll rate it moderate as the route is well-marked and paved!!
Trust me the views are worth it, unbeatable and my most memorable hike in Taiwan. I'll do it again in a heartbeat! Give it a go and have an early breakfast at the Family Mart with a gorgeous view of...

There are two paths leading up: A shorter "main path" with lots of stairs and a longer one which is less steep with less stairs, but requires you to walk longer through some wilderness. The climb itself already offers amazing views on Jiufen and the nearby villages and mountains. The mountaintop itself offers breathtaking ones onto the sea and allows you to even see Taipei 101 in the distance, if the conditions are clear. I enjoyed 30mins of solitude and had my delicious buns with a view. If you're in...
Read moreA hike worth taking if you’re staying overnight in Jiu Fen. The entrance is 10mins walk from Jiu Fen old street.
The hike up takes 1 hour up (slow pace) 900m distance and 588m elevation with fairly steep and uneven steps. But once you get to the top it’s worth it, with 360 panoramic view from Keelung to Jiu Fen and surrounding mountains. On a clear day you can even see Taipei 101.
Go at least 1 hour before sunrise for the best views and bring lots of drinking water! Take your time, enjoy the scenery and fresh air as you...
