Visiting Anping Fort in Tainan is like stepping back into the pages of history, where the echoes of past empires linger in the air. The fort, originally built by the Dutch in the 17th century, serves as a reminder of Taiwan’s complex colonial past and its resilient spirit.

The approach to the fort is marked by a striking staircase of weathered red bricks, leading up to the main entrance. The architecture blends European military design with local materials, creating a uniquely Taiwanese landmark. The bare branches of ancient trees frame the fort, their silhouettes adding to the timeless atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the statue of Koxinga, the Ming Dynasty general who seized the fort from the Dutch. Standing proud against the backdrop of the old walls, it’s a testament to his enduring legacy in Taiwan. Exploring the fort with family was a special experience—seeing my mother and loved ones beside such historic monuments added a personal touch to the visit.

The restored buildings within the fort showcase traditional Chinese architecture, complete with blue-tiled roofs and elegant arches. It’s a serene spot to reflect on the cultural blend that defines modern Taiwan. My mother, standing beside the monument engraved with the characters “安平古堡” (Anping Fort), was a poignant moment—bridging generations amidst a backdrop of endurance and peace.

If you find yourself in Tainan, Anping Fort is a must-visit. It’s not just about the history, but also about the layers of stories that come alive through its walls and pathways. It’s a place that invites you to ponder the past while enjoying the present—an experience both profound...

An Ping fortress is designed in favor of pragmatism and certainty.

With a date of nearly 400 years, especially everything in the early days of the fortress has been preserved, so as soon as you approach An Ping castle you will feel like time is slowing down, quiet and peaceful. strange peace.

To enter the inner grounds of the fortress, you will have to go through the red brick city gate standing on the side of the road. Although it has been weathered by time and there is a layer of moss surrounding it that loses its original color, but the majesty and solidity is still the same as at the beginning. The campus of the fortress is filled with luxuriant old trees shading with soft, green grass, extremely suitable for rest and relaxation after a long tiring day.

The fortress is located on the top, so if you want to visit, you have to step through the old brick steps, but this is also a convenient point for you to enjoy the beauty of the sea as well as An Ping port easily. It's easy, especially in such a quiet space, you can even hear the sound of waves lapping against the shore in the distance.

The most impressive feature of this fortress is the observatory built in the late 20th century with a design almost like a lighthouse. Standing from here you can enjoy the cool air and the clear and peaceful beauty of the immense sea and sky. In particular, this is also a place to help you watch the most beautiful sunset in An Ping.

The Fort is opened 8:30 - 17:30 from Monday to Sunday, with the ticket...

Man the cannons, up the ramparts, raise the colours - the ambience of Fort Anping in Tainan city is great for a walk into the past of this colourful coastal city/town. The fort was raised in the past n reminiscent of its Dutch, Chinese n Japanese ancestry n history. It was primarily the altercation with the Dutch that facilitated the building of this fortified bastion. The fort has been maintained n is well restored with a high watchtower which facilitates cannons and all. Many artefacts n a showcase of historical items are well displayed n translated into English. It’s a good hour’s tour and the surrounding area has many local food outlets n cafes. Entrance fee is minimal n it’s a well recommended tour for the entire family. The entrance before the fort also has an ancient temple with accompanying high gates and both have intricate carvings n architecture- a plus bonus for visitors to the fort 👍
