Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon Monument — Attraction in Si Sunthon

As you drive south from the airport into Phuket town, the road bifurcates: West to all the beaches popular with tourists, and East to Phuket Town, where people live and work.

Right before you reach that divide in the road, is a statue called "The Heroines". I have never seen so interesting a monument anywhere in the world. The world has many monuments - of soldiers, statesmen, well known people, but here was a statue of two peasant women with swords. They were not beautiful or glamorous. They looked determined, as if fighting to the death.

What my eyes always remember about Phuket are two things: One is the monument to "Two Heroines" - like 2 peasant soldiers protecting the city; Two is Cape Promthep.

I never forgot the statue of "Two Heroines" as you enter Phuket. A monument of two grim women with swords as you enter a city is a sight rarely or never seen. The story of the two women heroes of Phuket Is a story I've always wanted to know. It has to be a fascinating story.

This monument sends us back to 1785, when two sisters performed the feat of defending Phuket from the Burmese onslaught. At that time there were few men on the island (the campaign to conquer Thalang lasted 3-4 months) and the large Burmese army was about to conquer the island, but their plan was thwarted thanks to the ingenuity of sisters Chan and Muk.

The sisters appealed to the entire female population of the island and they shaved off their hair and took on a masculine appearance, creating the appearance of a large army, which stopped the Burmese pressure at the stage of giving the order to attack. In addition, the women made models of cannons and other defenses that the Burmese were not ready to see at all. At the same time, the male population, perfectly oriented on the terrain, committed sabotage in the enemy camp.

อนุสาวรีย์ท้าวเทพกระษัตรี ท้าวศรีสุนทร อีกหนึ่งสัญลักษณ์ประจำเมืองภูเก็ตที่ตั้งเด่นเป็นสง่าอยู่ในชุดโจงกระเบน สวมเสื้อแขนกระบอก ห่มตะเบงมาน และมือทั้งสองถือดาบ ที่ตั้งอยู่ที่วงเวียนสี่แยกท่าเรือ ตำบลศรีสุนทร อำเภอถลาง จังหวัดภูเก็ตนั้น ออกแบบโดย สนั่น  ศิลากร ปฏิมากรกองหัตถศิลป์ กรมศิลปากร และได้กระทำพิธียกอนุสาวรีย์ขึ้นประดิษฐานบนฐาน ณ สี่แยกบ้านท่าเรือ เมื่อวันที่ 24 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2510 เพื่อสดุดีวีรกรรมอันยิ่งใหญ่ของวีรสตรีเมืองถลางที่ได้ต่อสู้กับกองทัพทหารพม่าให้พ้นจากข้าศึกได้ในสงครามเก้าทัพ ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น โดยมีท้าวเทพกระษัตรี ซึ่งมีชื่อเดิมว่า "คุณหญิงจัน" และท้าวศรีสุนทร ผู้เป็นน้อง ชื่อเดิมคือ "คุณหญิงมุก" ซึ่งขณะนั้นเจ้าเมืองถลางสามีของคุณหญิงจันเพิ่งเสียชีวิตลง ทำให้เมืองถลางขาดผู้นำเเละทางกรุงเทพ ฯ ยังไม่ได้แต่งตั้งเจ้าเมืองคนใหม่ขึ้นปกครอง เหลือแต่คุณหญิงจันภริยาท่านเจ้าเมือง แม้คุณหญิงจันจะเป็นหญิงแต่ก็ไม่วางเฉยต่อบ้านเมือง คุณหญิงจันกับคุณหญิงมุกผู้เป็นน้องสาวพยายามรวบรวมชาวถลางและจัดทัพวางแผนการตั้งรับ ตลอดจนกลอุบายต่างๆ อย่างรัดกุม จนพม่าไม่สามารถเข้าตีเมืองถลางได้ หลังจากตั้งล้อมเมืองอยู่เป็นเวลาถึง 1 เดือน พม่าก็ต้องยกทัพถอยกลับไปเพราะขาดเสบียง เมื่อจบการทำศึกพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช จึงโปรดกล้าฯ แต่งตั้งคุณหญิงจันเป็นท้าวเทพกระษัตรี  และคุณหญิงมุกเป็นท้าวศรีสุนทร ด้วยวีรกรรมอันเป็นที่น่ายกย่องและเชิดชูของวีรสตรีทั้งสองที่ได้นำพาบ้านเมืองให้พ้นจากการรุกรานของข้าศึก จึงทำให้ท้าวเทพกระษัตรีและท้าวศรีสุนทรเป็นที่เล่าขานและศรัทธาของชาวเมืองภูเก็ตมาช้านาน จวบจนกระทั่งในปัจจุบัน โดยที่ฐานของอนุสาวรีย์ฯ มีจารึกไว้ดังนี้  “ท้าวเทพกระษัตรี (จัน) ท้าวศรีสุนทร (มุก) ได้กระทำ การป้องกันรักษาเมืองไว้เป็นสามารถ มิให้ข้าศึกยกมาประชิดเมืองถลาง เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2328 ตีหัก เอาเมืองได้  พม่าแตกทัพกลับไปเมื่อ 2 ฯ มะเส็ง สัปตศก จ.ศ. 1147 เป็นวีรกรรมอันควร แก่ชาวเมืองถลาง ตลอดจนชาวไทยทั่วไปยกย่องสรรเสริญ ชาวเมืองถลางโดยการนำของนายอ้วน สุรกุล ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ต  ช่วยกันสร้างไว้เมื่อ 5ฯ 6 มะเมีย อัฐศก จ.ศ. 1328  28 เมษายน พ.ศ.2509 เวลา 9.๐๐ น. ขอให้ดวงวิญญาณของวีรสตรี  ทั้งสองจงสถิตเป็นมิ่งขวัญปกป้อง...
