Better appreciated from the outside. I went twice, once in the evening as the sun was setting. Walk around the fort to truly appreciate it. I went back another day to go inside but I didn't think much of it. Wear good footwear. Don't take a hat as it is super windy. A lot of the steps and paving is uneven. Not really well looked after. I was the only person there the whole time. Cheap entrance fee. Information is in Arabic and French so I had no clue. Thankfully I had a guidebook with me. If you take a taxi, maybe get them to wait for you. I spent around 15 minutes inside. I walked to the main road but struggled to get a taxi so had to walk a futher 20 minutes in the heat to the main roundabout where it was busier to...

This fort has good parking and has Great Views from its ramparts and costs 10 TND to enter for non Tunisians

There is a lot of walking inside and it is not very accessible for the disabled visitor due to its age but has handrails around for other visitors for Health & Safety - something that has only been brought into place in recent years in Tunisia

A largish fort inside so will take up to 1 hour if you don’t rush too much and take your time - see added photos of relics and previous monuments No details or explanation plaques in place and little English spoken at the cash desk which is something that they need to improve on

Try a trip to the museum at the same time - not too far away - see separate...

Entry for Maghreb region is 5 TND,Eurpians pay 8 as of Jul/2025, place is small no access to the catacombs or the water reservoir or the tunnels between the fortress, part of the sea view vantage point is closed as will, has decent toilets. I noticed also fake carbonate based tablets with the goddess Tanet and Indian numbering on them on them, someone must have added them for suspense i guess but its sad to see them among genuine archeological site.

This fortress is not big but very interesting and left me with many questions. There were many archeologists actively working on projects inside but little information otherwise. I really enjoyed the views from the battlements and wandering around this historic building. 8 dinar entrance is very reasonable.

Borj Ghazi Mustapha, also known as Borj El Kebir, is a historic fortress in Houmt Souk, Djerba. Built in the 15th century and reinforced by the Ottomans, it defended the island against numerous invasions and remains a powerful symbol of Djerba’s resilience and strategic importance in the Mediterranean.
