The reviews were saying avoid, the fish was not local and was over priced. We decided to visit and see for ourselves. Having parked the car close to the market (5 mins) option for card or Ringo app. (Was £2.30 for 1 hour). We sauntered into the complex, stopping to see a Morris dancing display just in side. Moving on to see the wide variety of small stalls, selling a large selection of hand crafted products and some food. A stall with beautiful paintings was a particular favourite as was the seafood stall. Tub of cockles what could be better. On to a walk along the harbour looking at the small fishing boats, round down past the closed whelks building to the end and the lifeboat station and lifeboat. On the way back we saw a derelict building, that turned out to be the fish market. Part demolished and part boarded up. So we didn't get to see if the reviews were correct. There were children leaning over the rails crabbing with bucket full of various sizes of crabs. They all said the same, use bacon as the bait. So you have it from experts. Along the other road from the car park was the well known Oyster restaurant and factory, with a large queue outside. Not our flavour so we didn't bother. If you are in the area of Whitstable, it's worth an hour or 2 of your time for a visit. ...
Read moreThe market harbour area is small but fun, quite a lot of food stalls selling all different varieties of lovely food plus quite a few art & craft stalls which were excellent. We bought items from 42Adrift, a lovely little addition with great gifts and original artwork for your home. T he stallholders were all friendly and it was fascinating to walk around and I would definitely go back again when in the area. A lovely place to sit, eat and drink watch the hustle and bustle of harbour life going on around you. It's a shame there is not not more advertising going on outside, the railing would easily cope with a few posters advertising the food & craft stalls etc. Even signs at the end of the high street would help. We parked opposite in the car park and never knew it was there until the next day when we walked literally past the railings on that side of the road and saw some flags and wandered in. Totally unexpected to find such a great area. I guess if you live in Whitstable you would know but for tourists, we could easily have missed this area altogether and that would have been a real shame. We met people from Herne Bay who didn't even know about it and stumbled across the place. The footfall could be much higher and this would benefit not just the stallholders but surely the...
Read moreFirst time visit to Whitstable. I live further round the south coast so it was a short journey by train. Weather was fantastic so wanted to walk around after visiting the Monument pub which is a fair walk from the train station. After a few drinks and a great conversation with one of the customers my partner and I headed towards the sea. The market there was busy. The stalls offering a range of goods from art to accessories for your dog. We bought a dog collar, deodorising spray and a balm for our girl. As for the price ouch! £58! The owner of the business was very friendly though and chatted about how and his partner started the business. Still, the prices are not cheap. Next we had fish and chips by the sea a very short walk from the market. Again high prices for what we thought wasn't great food. Disappointed we headed home. We...
