Chang Chai Thai Kitchen in Ely — Restaurant in East Cambridgeshire

Good service, but portions were small. I had a starter and a main course but still left hungry. Food was hit and miss, some good, some bad, some terrible I ordered the Chilli Squid starter, was rubbery and tastless, i couldnt even bite through it. It was also a tiny portion even for a starter. Just 5 or 6 pieces of squid. For main I ordered crispy pork belly which came doused in sauce so wasn't crispy now, if it ever was. Tasted fine but meat was a little chewy and again portion was small. Tiny mound of rice that would only half fill a small ramekin and the dish itself was mostly vegetables with half a dozen small pieces of meat. We also ordered the 3 flavour fish which only really had one flavour...sweet chilli...couldn't even taste the fish. Also ordered green curry chicken and red curry beef. Both of these were tasty and meat was tender. The person on the table behind us found their selection to be equally hit and miss although i think he was being polite when he told the staff it must be his pallette that is off and...

This was the first time we had eaten here, the restaurant had been strongly recommended to us. The whole experience was very poor: the restaurant tired and in need of redecorating, the staff were surly and disinterested, but the most disappointing issue was the food. We each ordered a chicken curry: the chicken was luke warm and sliced, clearly not cooked with the curry sauce but added at the end, the meat tasted old and strong, and frankly as if it was a supermarket left over. The curry sauces themselves were OK as was the rice. And finally there was a non-optional service charge. Nothing would induce us to eat there again - there are plenty of much better options in Ely. We have been to many Thai restaurants before & I was quite taken aback when I saw the gravy swimming in the plate...I was more used to having served in a bowl separately from the rice. Anyway, I ordered the pork belly; and the meat was dry, took awhile to chew and I had to cut away the skin. The green curry chicken was ok...both on a smaller quantity. Without the 15% discount, this would be a very expensive lunch! Looking through at the reviews, definitely it needs to pay a bit more attention to the quality & quantity...
