Oliver Cromwell's House in Ely is the only surviving home of the British "Lord Protector", he lived in it for ten years (1643-1653). It is a small museum which aims to recreate how Cromwell lived during this time, and does a pretty good job of it. This isn't a huge place, so it will not occupy visitors for much more than an hour. The audio guide you get at the front desk (UKP 6.50 for an adult ticket) is very helpful, make sure to use it. As you walk through the rooms you'll get a nice sense of the place and the history behind it, though the means of "immersion" and "interactivity" are very limited indeed. Most of the time you'll be listening to the audio guide or reading the info posters on the walls. A brief video at the start will give you some info on the man's life. Worth a visit if you're in Ely anyway (the marvellous Ely Cathedral) is just a short walk away). Also, make sure to have a quick look at Cromwell's community church, St. Mary', right next door.

Oliver Cromwell's House serves as both museum and Ely's Tourist Information Centre. The house, where Oliver Cromwell raised his family and carried out his local duties includes a series of well preserved tableaux and set pieces such as the kitchen which demonstrate the nature of everyday life in his time. Having recently enjoyed a £30K refit thanks to a development grant, the attraction has been refurbished with new rooms and interactive presentations. Cromwell's House also hosts Escape Rooms for groups of up to 8 people, perfect for a corporate celebration or team building exercise, a family day out our a hen or stag do! Cromwell's House has also recently launched its Murder Mystery evenings which feature a full period meal and ghoulish sleuthing fun! Located in the city centre area with car parking just across the road and easy access to other facilities, Oliver Cromwell's House is a must see stop on any trip to Ely!

It was Halloween 🎃 and a blue moon 🌚 and with trick or treating cancelled the people at Oliver Cromwell's House ran a socially-distanced event for the youngsters. Taking the York Dungeon idea but run in a fenland-provincial best foot forward sort of way they told stories of local witches and ghosts, played bingo and told jokes. They handed out sweets and generally made a good effort to entertain the children. My 9 year old enjoyed it which was the crucial thing, and that's why I give it four stars for that event. Personally it was my first time at Oliver Cromwell's House and it seemed a little sparse in terms of history, and perhaps on the original fabric of the building, but that might have because of the event. When this is all over, and perhaps we regain our freedoms I might go back to try to find the answer to whether he was hero or villain. But nothing's ever that simple is it?

Visited Ely on the way back from a weekend away. All the town car parks are free in Ely though restricted by duration of stay from Monday to Saturday. Oliver Cromwell house is a few minutes walk from the town centre or cathedral. It is easy to locate by following the town signs. You are provided with an audio guide which you press the corresponding number as you move around the house. There is a short intro video when you move to the first room. There are various props you can try on including heavy copper armour helmets. Definitely worth a visit in Ely if you are interested in learning more about Oliver Cromwell and his role in English history, its approx 1 hour duration of you listen to the audio guide. 1 star deducted as no toilet facilities and no disabled access as they are several flights steps throughout the house.

This museum expertly evokes Cromwell's era and context. One left it with a far clearer idea of the influences that motivated him. On the homelier side, the kitchen was a delight; the view into the garden, quite charming and timeless. As soon as I can lay my hands on eels and suchlike, I shall try the recipes that are there for the taking. (What stunning largesse they dealt with in their cooking! Is this due to there having been many people in the household, or due to people having had parricularly large appetites to cater for?). The documentary on the fenns, at the end of the tour, was full of fascinating information. Well worth a visit.

Absolutely loved it. Definitely on my list of best small museums in the region. The rooms are interesting, very educational, and give a brilliant snapshot of Britain at the time of Cromwell's life. This is done from the perspective of the habits and customs of the day but also from a historical perspective with a focus on creating a balanced and thorough portrait of the man. Quirky bonus at the end: visitors can share their view of Cromwell on a whiteboard and the museum compiles monthly statistics on how many people came out describing him as a 'villain' and how many as a 'hero.'
