Absolutely love this place, as a child we would visit whitby, as many folk do. But venture a little further north (literally just round the corner from whitby) and there is Sandsend, an absolute gem of a beach front, there's little here apart from a beach shop and a pub and a couple of cafes (more of which later) but how delightful is it to just stroll on the beach and blow away the cobwebs. The dog is also beach friendly. At the southern end of the beach its very sandy, and there's a beautiful cafe pierced on the edge which does very good food, and is also licenced should you fancy a tipple, parking is on the road but there is ample, tho expect to pay (£3 for two hours) at the northern end there is also a large car park at the foot of the hill and another cracking little cafe with a lovely walled garden out the back. Sunny days are perfect here but I've also spent many a day just sitting in the car and watching the waves thunder over the road and buildings which are literally on the beach. This is also a walkers delight as its possible to walk into whitby either on the costal path or on the beach (but please check the tides and don't get caught out!) or North to the equally delightful Runswick Bay and Staithes. This is my happy place for its simplicity and no frills seaside...
Read moreThe beach itself is brilliant, exactly what you would expect for a Yorkshire coast day out. A gorgeous stretch of golden sand bordered by sharp rugged cliffs full of nesting seabirds, fossils a-plenty, rock pools and a view of Whitby Abbey in the distance. The only downside is the fact that some horrible greedy committee decided it was a good idea to charge the visitor £5 for parking on the side of the (already paid for) public road. If this gifted/grabbed money was spent on improvements, maybe even a cleaner for the public toilets then it might have softened the pocket shock but no, so please do your 'business' before having a great time on the beach unless you have a liking to share room space with similar odours and the appeal of Satan and his demonic hoards post curry night single overflowing plastic festival...
Read moreHas to be one of the best beaches ever, it's a sandy beach, not covered in pebbles, good for surfing, kayaking, swimming, close to lots of cafes, tides is a favourite, tends to have a large pool where the river runs into the sea near the bridge, brilliant for the little ones and easy for the adults to keep an eye on them. There are a couple of car parks and street parking but this is not enough as it is a really popular place, so if in the summer or school hols best to get there early if you can, dependent on the tides you can walk along the beach all the way to Whitby, check the tides before hand., It's great anytime of year as in the winter months sometimes you have it too yourself, but that's a rear occurance as it grows in popularity, can't recommend it enough,...
