The background to this review is that we went on a Saturday evening and it was very busy. We were also a large party of 6, originally booked for 4 and 2 added on and the restaurant did their best to accomodate us. We were recommended to eat here by someone who had been at a quieter time and had a far better experience, I'm therefore hoping our visit was an exception and not representative of the restaurant all of the time. I ordered the chilli to be told that they had none left, changed my order to pie to be told that my dad had ordered the last slice and I would need to wait an extra 30 minutes if I wanted pie. No bother, dad changed his order so I could have the last slice of pie. The portion sizes were good for all meals, very generous. My pie turned up cold with a hair in it (I didn't complain as I knew there was no more pie and honestly couldn't be bothered with a fuss), the pie itself was very dry but the gravy and chips were good. The rest of the food was average apart from the lobster which was excellent. My only other observation was that the place was very cramped, probably because it is very popular. The poor waitresses were bashing in to us every time they walked past the table. We didn't feel comfortable, quickly ate our dinner and left. To sum up - cramped pub, very busy when we visited, average food (probably because of how busy they were), nice staff. My advice would be to go at a quieter time and order...
Read moreFood was amazing, unfortunately the service was awful! 30 muns after ordering we were informed that there was no curry which is far too late to be informed. Finally after 45 minutes of ordering our food turned up, the adults chicken burger was wrong and the waitress also wrongly ordered garlic prawns instead of mussels. Now you can excepts that mistakes happen but the apology was diabolical. Faces were made and no compensation was offered. When we asked to see a manager we had to wait another 20 mins. Eventually the 2 wrongly ordered dishes were removed from the bill. If a sincere apology and this compensation was offered in the first place I would have left happy. Instead excuses and being busy with little intention to rectify is what we received. We were booked in and not a walk in so if they can't cope then they need to learn to control the bookings and walk ins. Half of my party come here every year on more than one occasion but this was my first. I personally will never visit again and unfortunately neither will the retuning guests that I dined with. Such a shame the service was so bad as the...
Read moreReal shame. My husband and I visited here around 2 years ago and ate in the beer garden. After visiting Whitby again, we decided to eat upstairs in the restaurant. Nice starter but my main course was not good. I ordered monkfish and king prawn Thai curry. The monkfish was overcooked and falling apart, the prawns were hard and the curry was watery and and didn't have much taste. Throughout our sitting all the other customers around us were asked if their food was ok. We didn't get asked once. When the waitress collect my plate, even though I had hardly eaten anything, I had to stop her and say I didn't like my meal. She asked if it wasn't to my taste. I said no it just wasn't good and explained why. The waitress said she would let the chief know. We then got a different waitress saying the other waitress darent come and let us know that the desert we both ordered wasn't available. I ordered a different 1. Once again no one asked if we enjoyed our meal. When paying we just paid without being asked if we enjoyed our meal. Very disappointing. Full price paid but...
