Southchurch Hall occupies it's own little, moated oasis, secluded among trees, inside a vast suburban sprawl of housing. I was there last weekend for nostalgia, to remember a primary school trip in the 1970s. But a police car was parked outside the gate. A sign declared the area as a police monitored zone. There was a mum and her toddler feeding the ducks, but all was not quite right. One or two people on the benches looked as if they had nowhere else to go. The hall itself was locked and the windows covered with Lexan to fend off stones and burglars. Ten minutes was enough. We left. The police car had gone. A 20-something female with black eyes walked into the park. A guy with a hoodie followed 20 feet behind and caught up with her. Something was quickly exchanged between them. Shame. Read moreBack in the 70s we lived in Woodgrange Drive and so visited the gardens frequently. We haven’t been back in a while until this week and how sad to see the overgrowth and neglect. The pond is awful and needs cleaning maybe then the lovely ducks might return and the gardens need clearing. I appreciate times are hard and cutbacks and lockdowns have made things worse and of course with the lack of rain everything is dried out but it would be nice to think that in the future it could all be bought back to life! These little parks and gardens are so important to wildlife and people to visit and with its history this one is very important. It would be lovely if a group of volunteers could be formed and work there a few hours each week it would soon bring it...
Read moreVisited there today what a lovely little park. No issue with the ponds and area. Ok so the ponds have some growth and some of the grass is tall.. all adds to the nature part and what the park is also for.. the animals and well as people. To be honest it was truly fantastic... If it was your own garden and house for sure you would be in love with the place. Go .. relax.. chill.. and let's the kids run and enjoy. Lot of different areas to fill your eyes. The house is stunning really and a fantastic job done on the restoration. A lovely lovely park.....
