A Hidden Gem of Redcar Zetland Lifeboat Museum and Redcar Heritage Centre is a must-visit for anyone interested in local history and maritime stories. Despite its modest size, the museum packs a powerful punch with its engaging exhibits and knowledgeable staff. From the moment you step inside, you're immersed in the fascinating world of lifeboats and Redcar's rich heritage. The exhibits are well-curated and informative, bringing history to life in a captivating way. I was particularly impressed by the interactive displays and the opportunity to see the coastline in real-time via the radar on the second floor. One of the highlights was the jaw of a sperm whale, a stark reminder of the dramatic events that have unfolded on Redcar's shores. The story behind this exhibit is truly captivating. Among the other notable exhibits are: Historical lifeboats: Learn about the evolution of lifeboat design and the brave men and women who risked their lives to rescue those in peril. Maritime artifacts: Explore a collection of nautical instruments, models, and other items that provide a glimpse into the region's maritime past. Local history exhibits: Discover the history of Redcar and its surrounding area, including its industrial heritage and social development. If you're looking for a unique and educational experience, I highly recommend visiting Zetland Lifeboat Museum and Redcar Heritage Centre. You'll be surprised by the depth and richness of the stories it...
Read moreA humble museum in which has as it's centrepiece exhibit a refurbished boat from 200 years ago, a time at the heart of industrialization in the North.
Aside from this, this small museum harbors a surprisingly large array of everyday items and workplace tools, goods and machinery that colored the lives of the ancestors of the people of Redcar during the rocky course it charted during the industrial revolution which impacted greatly on the lives of the people in the area.
Given the work put into restoring the boat and providing a treasure trove of items that give you a glimpse into the past and the battles all our ancestors went through to provide a better life for their progeny, and what little the people here ask for by way of admission and contribution, it is well worth a visit even if only for half an hour.
It is a real contribution to the prom at Redcar and is an understated find all things considered. If you're from the area or not it gives a sense of space, time and legacy to Redcar and ourselves, telling a local story about people that the history books are likely...
Read moreWhat a wonderful and quaint museum. It may appear a little unassuming from the outside, but it is steeped in a rich local lifeboat history and heritage inside. We were treated to a unique tour by Peter, who is one of the volunteers at the Museum. We were so grateful for his time and for sharing the unique story of lifeboats and their importance and relevance to the local community over the past 200 years.
Hopefully, the museum can continue to enchant many thousands of more visitors with its unique local history. As it is entirely self-funded, please consider donating whatever contribution you can to ensure that the museum continues to thrive...
