Great place to come for walks and a bit of history.
The Abbey was dissolved in 1540. It was the last monastic house in England to be surrendered to the Crown.
Although, you can still see 14th century gatehouse and bridge that remains, as well as the walls of the post-medieval house that was built following its dissolution.
We have visited in early evening and it still managed to see the beauty of this area, especially with all Christmas lights, which added extra magical feeling to it.
Lots of ducks in the river minding their business. :)
Beautiful garden.

The car park is next to Waltham Abbey Gardens and is £1 first hour and afterwards £2 up to 24 hours.

The main drawback is that it's really hard to know in advance whether you'll find it open or not. There's a great cycle route from East London up the Lea Navigation,with no chance of getting lost. Read moreAn interesting stroll around simple, but attractive, grounds around the old abbey. The information boards within the grounds are interesting. Sadly, the archway leaving to, what I believe, were the cloisters is very messy. It's a shame to leave it in that state as the rest of the grounds are beautiful.
I must say that after a brief wander around the town with my dog, I noticed that many local people seemed to be very friendly. So, I really enjoyed my few hours...
