This was one of the most interesting places I've ever visited. My.friend and I spent hours here. From the outside it doesn't look much but step inside and you have the history of numerous individual craft not whole aircraft but pieces. You get to see the workings and,if you're lucky like we were, there's an incredibly knowledgeable elderly gent who doesn't work there but just spends his days there. He can tell you so many fascinating facts like how the washers on a propellor plane actually work, things you may never have thought of before but are so very Interesting. There's a whole aircraft outside and you can go I side the fuselage which is fascinating to see. When we were there a budding outside of the main one was about to be set up for use for a fleet air arm display. We were highly priveleged to be shown some of the many vast private collections of model ships etc that are due to be displayed. One set all in numerous glass cases, also have the owners uniform due to go on display. Once fully set up this large building will look stunning. Entry is surprisingly cheap and the place is like a TARDIS,it goes on and on. Easily spend several hours there and we'll worth every minute. Fully run by dedicated volunteers. Pay it a visit, you will be amazed at what these volunteers...
Read moreA fine museum of the old school variety. Tens of thousands of artifacts behind wavy glass cases. It's ideal for the quick visit to see a few items of local interest at a time.
In an odd way, it's ideal for children. It doesn't require attention span to enjoy and wisely there is good dinosaur section!
The slave trade exhibit is handled well. Few politics and much empathy. Children will grasp the essentials quickly.
For adults the displays are eclectic and well connected to Fens life of the last few thousand years. It would take dozens of visits to check out each item.
For those wanting serious research, book a time with the curator to use the search room. Commercial, legal and parish records available no other way are here. The curator himself knows the questions you didn't know to ask.
Admission is free but be sure to leave 5£ per adult in the gift box to sustain this...
Read moreThis museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the country. It's hidden deep in the heart of Wisbech and is certainly worthy of more footfall.
Tickets are free for certain groups but for an adult it's £5 for an annual pass (great if you're local).
It houses the original draft manuscript of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and a killer whale that died in the river during the 1800s just to name a couple of things.
Anyone visiting should also visit Elgoods Brewery and Peckover House. All within a 10 minute walk of one another.
It's only open on certain days so check the website for more information...
