This is quite the Yorkshire adventure. With a steep and uneven set of rough steps leading down from the main road by the Mallyan Spout Hotel, you have to be sure footed to even contemplate this day out.
It feels like you’re descending to an abyss… keep going, and eventually you reach The Valley floor, turn left and you quickly start to scramble over the rocks of the riverside. It gets quite slippery, so do be cautious. We managed with our 4 year old, but she’s grown up like a mountain goat to be honest, make sure you know your children’s abilities.
Some more scrambling, past a tree packed with Pennies, and there it is. Way above your head, falling to the River next to you. Mallyan Spout is a fantastic adventure for children, and The Valley does have a rather magical feel to it. We love it! Really beautiful. Watch the weather though, you wouldn’t want to be trying it in the rain. The rocks and the path are treacherous in bad weather.
You can either go back up the path you took, or from the waterfall, go back along the rocks and keep going along the riverbank away from the waterfall. You end up doing a loop back into Goathland. Check the...
Read moreWe have a dog that oozes energy! We have to make sure that the exercise regime is on target. In this occasion a brisk walk to The spout seemed like a perfect way to sap some excess energy for him.. and us.
The path down the side of the Mallayan Spout Hotel was relatively steep and continuous in its descent. There was recent works in evidence and the path although wet from the rains was not slippery or muddy. Someone had chose their substrate well and it made for a secure footed drop into the woods below. Here though, and at the mercy of the water course, the woodland and no doubt, the fall out from the fields above, all changed. This was muddy, swampy and it could be said… sticky to the point of historic proportions! To be fair it had rained a lot in recent weeks both locally and across the UK.
However, the final 130m walk was brief enough and the views of the waterfall were worth the relative pain. Our ascent due to the well managed footpath was long but easy. Nothing over an hour and a lovely hotel and bar at the top made for a wonderful way to drain an overly...
Read moreThis is a wonderful place to spend the day, free charge. We didn’t find the entrance right away – it's located to the right of the hotel, where there's a small wooden gate and a sign. The waterfall is not far, about 200 meters from the entrance, but the path involves some uphill and downhill walking, and you’ll need to scramble over rocks to get a good view of it. Slippery when wet, not good for limited mobility people. There are a few benches along the way. The setting is incredibly scenic, like something out of a fairy tale. We especially loved a fallen tree shaped like a dragon’s head, covered in coins that look like scales. The hotel, built in the mid-19th century, has a lot of character and atmosphere. There's a café where you can enjoy tea, coffee, and other drinks. Sheep roam freely around the area, adding to the charm. We were just passing by and, judging by the map, didn’t realize how beautiful it would be – we would have planned to stay longer. Highly...
