Ah, Water Lane in Castle Combe. Stepping onto that path is like slipping into a secret world, a world carved from honey-coloured stone and woven with sun-dappled leaves. The River Bybrook gurgles merrily alongside, a liquid lullaby serenading the ancient cottages with their rose-draped walls. Tranquility hangs heavy in the air, thicker than the scent of wildflowers and freshly baked bread wafting from open windows.

It was here, in this idyllic cocoon, that my weird little nephew, bless his quirky little soul, decided to add his own, rather unconventional, note to the symphony. One moment he was skipping stones, giggling as they danced across the water's surface, the next, his face scrunched up in concentration, and...well, let's just say the Bybrook received a surprise deposit.

Now, some might find this jarring, a chaotic blip in the serene landscape. But not me. Not in this haven of imperfection, where moss defies gravity on crooked chimneys and ducks waddle nonchalantly through the village square. My nephew's "contribution" became a shared moment as it began its downstream voyage; a secret giggle amidst the hushed whispers of leaves and the gentle gurgle of the river. It was a reminder that life, even in its messiest moments, can be beautiful, unexpected, and...

Visiting Castle Combe’s Water Lane felt like stepping into a living postcard. Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, this charming village offers an enchanting blend of history and natural beauty.

The iconic view from the stone bridge over the Bybrook River, flanked by ancient weavers’ cottages, is truly mesmerizing. The honey-colored Cotswold stone buildings, with their timeless architecture, evoke a sense of serenity and nostalgia. It's no wonder this spot is often hailed as one of the most photographed in the region.

Strolling along Water Lane, the gentle murmur of the river accompanies you, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The absence of modern intrusions, such as streetlights or overhead wires, preserves the village's authentic medieval charm. It's evident that Castle Combe has remained largely unchanged for centuries, offering a genuine glimpse into England's past.

For those planning a visit, I recommend arriving early in the morning or late afternoon to experience the village in its most...

Great little village to visit. Even today it was busy, so in the summer. I would imagine it is really busy. There is a car park up quite a steep road and there are other places to park nearer if you can find a spot. The Manor House is very nice and they cater for afternoon tea and lunches. They have cottages for those who would like to stay in those instead. The village dates back many centuries, and one of the original Knight's who fought in two crusades is buried there. There are 2 pubs to have a drink or food, and a small place selling cakes. The village was also used to film War Horse the film. And also Dolittle the film. Castle Combe golf course, which is next to the Manor House, is stunning.
