If you're keen on kayaking this isn't the place to go. Came here with family and friends with 2 kayaks hoping for a nice day on the water. Having visited the lake District many times in the past now that we have moved this appears to be the closest thing. Got the kayaks out of the van got.on the water and one of the young water police there told me I can't be on the water without a lifejacket. Fair enough I went to where he suggested I get one from and when questioned why I needed one I got told I would need to pay £25 launch fee. Bearing in mind I'd already carried my kayak down to the water so it didn't need launching and that I've never had to pay anything in the lake District this launch fee seemed a crazy sum of money, bearing in mind we had brought 2 kayaks so we decided not to use them both as it would have cost £50 to "launch" them both. In addition you only get to use a tiny amount of the water as there are white buoys that you're not supposed to go past when there is so much more to explore and paddling around in the small area gets boring pretty quickly. The place itself is lovely and the staff were polite and helpful but the rules and costs really put us off. We won't be going back unfortunately which is a shame as it could be...
Read moreThe most perfect location for a picnic or walk. Close to fairly large carparks, toilets and a small snack bar, (also the bike hire shop and climbing wall) this area is easily accessible by people who can't or don't want to walk to far. The slope down to the reservoir is grassy and south facing with quite a few trees so it's pleasant on even the hottest/sunniest days as there are quite a few shaded areas. The views across the reservoir from this location are lovely and there's normally enough going on on the water to make it a relaxing watch. The rocks along the shore line are a magnet to children that like to explore. The only slight downside is the price of the parking which ramps up quite quickly to the full-day price of £6 (August 2020), but as long as you plan to spend a while by the reservoir, it's probably only slightly expensive. They also offer a full year parking permit (that also covers parking at Grafham) for £50 and for regular visitors this could be a much better option. The system is a pay on exit so take your ticket with you so you can pay as you return to your car. Definitely worth a visit on...
Read moreIt's a beautiful place, nice to cycle round about 15 miles or 21 miles if you take in the Peninsular. Parking isn't the cheapest but if you spend the day with a car full of friends it's cheap enough. Covid rules have stopped a lot happening. But the visit isn't spoilt unless you go for things that have been stopped. Over all the whole area is beautiful, nice wildlife on the main body of water, special protected area for birds at both ends of each of the legs of the lake. Even with the present lockdown rules, there's still plenty to do. Massive car parks, toilets were open on...
