Der West Highland-Way (WHW) ist der erste offizielle Fernwanderweg Schottlands. Die Gesamtlänge beträgt 96 Meilen bzw. 154 km., alle Anstiege zusammengerechnet sind auf der gesamten Streckeb4500 Höhenmeter zu bewältigen. Mit der Planung eines durchgängigen Fernwanderweges zwischen Glasgow und Fort William wurde bereits in den 1960er Jahren begonnen. Seit der Eröffnung im Oktober 1980 ist der West Highland-Way zum beliebtesten Fernwanderweg Schottlands geworden. Obwohl jährlich etwa 50000 Personen den gesamten Weg oder Teile davon erwandern, ist der West Highland-Way in den meisten Abschnitten noch so nicht überlaufen wie z.B. der Jakobsweg in Spanien. Naturliebhaber kommen an den meisten Stellen voll auf ihre Kosten. Der erste Streckenabschnitt führt von Milngavie im Norden Glasgows durchhügliges Gelände zum Loch Lomond, dann weiter am Ostufer des Sees, passiert dann die Highland-Boundary- Faults und gelangt am nördlichen Ende von Loch Lomond ins Glen Falloch. Danach wird die Landschaft schrofer und gebirgiger. Man läuft dann am Rannoch Moor vorbei und gelangt bei Kingshouse an den Eingang des Glen Coe. Über einen steilen Pass gelangt man dann nach Kinlochleven, mitten in den Highlands. Der letzte Abschnitt führt am Ben Nevis vorbei bis in die Hauptstraße von Fort William. Mit Ausnahme der Inseln ist der West Highland-Way eine Abbildung dessen, was Schottland an Landschaft und Natur zu bieten hat: eine einzigartige Möglichkeit, das Land im Kleinen intensiv kennenzulernen. Eingeplant werden sollte für den gesamten Weg mindestens eine Woche. Das setzt voraus, daß man 20 bis 25 km pro Tag durch schwieriges und bergiges Gelände wandern kann, Abstecher sind kaum möglich.
