Freshly graduated student here, to sum up the experience PROS: very international university- Surrey has one of the highest percentages of foreign students and this translates into very interesting class demographics with many open people who are easy to get along with (of course you will not get along with everyone but thats obvious in life).
Student union- The union is one of, if not the best organised student union I seen at the universities I visited. It is very active compared to what you find elsewhere and organises events very regularly as well as running the entertainment venues (such Rubix or the Marquee which are a blast).
Great campus- the campus is absolutely everything you expect and need in a campus, with shops and entertainment venues avialable. Rubix (the campus club) can get repetitive but it is in my opinion the best club in the town offering a safe party experience. In addition to campus is located near to the town centre and train station which allows for easy access to London and the surrounding area incase guildford gets a bit boring.
Prestige- Despite the university dropping in rankings I can say as a graduate it is still a largely respected university and graduate prospects are decent, atleast among my friends in the business school.
Support staff- Most of the support staff such as receptionists, student finance department or even cleaners and security are very polite, looking to help students and rarely leave a negative experience behind them.
The good teachers- for the most part the teaching staff are of a high standard and provide us with what we need. This is not always the case as is mentioned in the cons section but mostly this positive experience does apply. Many staff in the business school are former high ranking executives with rich experience in industry.
CONS: Management- the management of the uni is at this point just a meme among students. Despite a vote of no confidence which overwhelmingly voted to remove the current vice-chancellor he is still in charge. The university has been dropping in rankings for past years and it doesn't look like the situation is much better now than 3 years ago (only dropping one place this year, hurray). Complaints about staff in the business school have fallen on deaf ears with most of these about the incompetence of certain staff.
Teaching irregularities- As mentioned above there are regular complaints from students about the quality of teaching. It is important to state that a lot of the lecturers are very good and do their job. However you have roughly a 20% chance per module of getting a teacher that is less than adequate and you will basically have to carry yourself, I would agree that sometimes criticism of lecturers is misplaced as students are also responsible for their results there have been some horrendous moments while studying where even the most hard working students severely struggled due to a complete lack of clarity on exams and coursework despite repeated questions.
Housing- Housing on the main campus itself is fine, the location is good for going out, shopping, socialising and attending class. However if you live in private accomodation or hazel farm court your student experience will suffer greatly. Commuting to campus in such a small town for 45 minutes each way in frankly ridiculous.
NB- Many of the cons in my opinion are simply linked to poor management, support staff are limited in what they can do by insufficient guidelines set by the uni. The incompetent teachers are there because feedback is ignored. The housing situation is also set by the management.
Overall- Surrey is a very good university to study at, the time you have is very fun and adds a lot of good experience to your life. I would recomend it to people considering it as a choice . Despite the negatives I mentioned they apply to a minority of situations and for the most part the university functions properly.
Tips for students- Study abroad. Attend lectures. Be polite. Study hard. Have fun, go out...
Read moreThe best university for all students whether international or local. I travelled from London to find a place filled with hard working students and amazing lecturers who work tirelessly to ensure we get an education, not only a degree (unlike most universities that only care about their ranking). Surrey puts its students first and ensures a fair environment for all students of all backgrounds and religions. A very diverse university and a very approachable team of lecturers, staff and security. Everyone feels appreciated here and everyone is treated fairly.
People I must mention are;
Dr Lorenzo Santorelli, an amazing person and in my opinion the best lecturer in this university, really goes out of his way to ensure we learn and is extremely passionate about his subject which made me and others in my class grow a passion too.
Dr Alfred Thumser, a very lovely lecturer who focuses on educating us and doing a weekly class to check up on our mental health. He is one of the nicest people you will ever meet at this university and an all-round amazing person.
Dr Mohammad Asim, a very friendly lecturer who is extremely passionate about his subject and helps his students as much as he can to ensure we learn. Not only does he ensure we get good grades but he teaches us in depth to allow us to gain better knowledge to prepare ourselves for the working world.
Dr Alison Cottell, in my opinion she is the number one supporter of students at this university, she puts us first and always provides us with amazing content to learn and she is very passionate. Dr Cottell helped me find my route in education and helped me plan my future as a scientist. I honestly can’t express how grateful I am to have Dr Cottell as a lecturer. It was amazing being in her class learning too.
This is the best university ever, I had to go out of my way to show my appreciation for my lecturers and university. If your going to study biomed, Surrey is the way...

Experienced faculty, employability, student experience, and student satisfaction are main reasons for considering this uni.
