From the moment you set foot in the historical grounds of Laugharne Castle, you're transported to a time of knights and poets. The castle's majestic ruins, with its medieval stone towers and remnants of a Tudor mansion, are a testament to Wales' rich past. It's no wonder that Dylan Thomas, the castle's most famous resident, found his muse here.

The ornamental gardens are a delight, offering peaceful walks and stunning views of the Taf estuary. It's the perfect place for a family day out or a quiet retreat to immerse oneself in the beauty of Carmarthenshire.

The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable, always ready to share stories that bring the castle's history to life. And for those who appreciate literature, the summerhouse where Thomas wrote "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog" is a must-see.

In Welsh, we say "Cymru am byth" (Wales forever), and after a visit to Laugharne Castle, it's easy to see why. This castle is not just a site to visit; it's a piece of Welsh heritage that stays with you long after you leave.

Diolch yn fawr (Thank you very much) to the caretakers of this wonderful site for preserving such a treasure. I'll be returning soon, with friends in tow, to relive the experience. Bendigedig!...

The castle is in the centre of Laugharne, the main town car park is less than 2 minutes walk, no on site parking. There's not much left to look at, it is more of a ruin than a complete castle, though the outside is well in tact, but it's in a beautiful location. There is one tower that you can go up to the top with stunning views of the coastline and the town. Make sure to find the writing shed (Dylan Thomas reportedly wrote a story in there as well as the writing shed at the boathouse). We spent around half an hour here, though not our first visit. There is a large grass area and also picnic tables dotted about. There is a gift shop, but no toilets or refreshments. The town public toilets are just outside the castle, you may have to pay for these I'm not sure, so bring change just in case! There's a lovely picnic spot outside the castle walls by the main car park with picnic tables and a bridge crossing a small river. Nice day out, the town is quite small, but has a handful of places to eat, pub, cafe, chip shop, ice cream stand, though these are not always open so worth checking the...

As a Cadw member, Laugharne Castle was part of our membership to enter free of charge. The castle located on the river Taf, has beautiful views over the estuary. The castle itself is a delight, however, very few rooms remain, and would be a short visit, if it were not for the garden games. After looking around the castle walls, entering into the summer house used by Dylan Thomas and admiring from where he wrote, we ventured through the gardens. We enjoyed playing noughts and crosses, throw a hoop, four in a row, boules and lastly chess. This was a chance to get a very beautiful photograph, of Grand chess in grand grounds, within castle walls. Should you require toilets, there are public conveniences between the car park and the castle, a short walk down the hill. The gift shop is open when the castle is and we visited August when the opening times were 10am to 5pm. A delightful couple of...

Castell Talacharn Laugharne Castle - Castell Talacharn Laugharne Castle (Castell Talacharn) is a medieval castle overlooking the River Taf but was later developed into an Elizabethan Mansion. The castle developed from the early twelfth century and was later strengthened in stone. The inner ward has two towers, and there is a curtain wall on the outer ward with a gatehouse. The remains seen today date back to the late thirteenth century, although a twelfth century Norman castle is said to have stood on this site. The castle was the site of battles between the Normans and Welsh. It was later strengthened and eventually developed into a Tudor mansion. The castle was in Royalist and then Parliamentary control during the Civil war and partially destroyed after that. The castle grounds are open between 1st April and 30th September.

The castle is pretty and enjoys a lovely outlook over the estuary. However, it’s quite small and you can see everything in just a few minutes — I’m not sure it justifies the entrance fee, especially when nearby castles like Llansteffan are free and in my opinion, more impressive. Having said this, the small garden was well kept and had the most amazing smelling rose blooming The town itself: We visited on a Monday afternoon at the very end of June (not exactly out of season), and although Laugharne has several pubs, only the wine bar was open — the others didn’t open until between 3:30 and 5pm. We might have enjoyed the experience more if we’d been able to grab some lunch and a drink to extend our visit but overall it felt a bit underwhelming.

We didn’t go into the castle itself, but walking the full exterior loop was totally worth it. The path winds you through a mix of charming streets, little bridges, and open views of the estuary. The castle ruins pop up between trees and rooftops, and honestly, it was just such a gorgeous setting for photos. The tide was low when we were there, so we saw boats resting in the mudflats, and the whole landscape felt kind of frozen in time—but in a poetic way, not a boring one. The village is quiet but full of character. It’s an easy, peaceful walk, and if you're into photography or just nice scenery, this place really delivers.
