I attended the 16th National Peace Symposium as a privileged guest of the Noor Mosque, Langley Green, following their Open Day in early March 2019. The atmosphere was as to be expected in any place of worship: one of reverance, of stillness and above all of peace. Despite the large number of over 700 guests, Muslims of course and other faiths such as Sikh & Hindu, Christians of Catholic, Anglican, Church of Scotland traditions and those with none, the mosque itself was tranquility itself, a haven of quiet, an oasis of calm. In this it was aided by the architectural highlight, a white dome inscribed with a verse from the Koran, repeated six times. A plain arch at the front, facing towards Mecca from which prayers were later led by their spiritual leader, was likewise inscribed with a Koranic verse: roughly translated as 'There is only one God...' The horizontally striped carpet in seagreen and cream creates guidelines for orderly respectful worship, regardless of numbers attending - often 2,000 but more on many occasions.
Christian churches are often adorned with highly decorative works of art, paintings, frescos, sculptures, altarpieces, stained glass windows, medieval tombs and so on from centuries past and even contemporary artists. By contrast this stunning mosque has, like others worldwide, simplicity at its core: bare walls, save the two decorative inscriptions, natural light, and a few chairs for the infirm. Let nothing distract the pray-er from prayer. Let nothing take focus away from Allah.
I love and respect and enjoy the riches of our unique Christian heritage, displayed in Cathedrals and churches up and down the land, and of course across the globe. I can fully appreciate the role Christianity has played in Western European thought, culture and art. However I can equally admire the Islamic heritage in architecture and worship space that reflects the theological understandings of human beings to their creator God. The mosques in Cordoba, Spain and of course at Mecca are astonishingly beautiful, and full of the presence of, well of what?...that unmistakable, awesome, holy God...Allah, Jehovah, the One true God.
It is at this central point, physically and metaphorically under the Dome, standing, kneeling or prostrate before God that we can all meet in unity and harmony; we can share the common goal of peace. Yes an end to division, disharmony, civil wars and malice, but peace as a state of mind, body and soul where we ourselves are transformed by prayer most certainly, but submitting humbly to the action of God on our wilful natures. Blessed indeed are the...
