Manchester Family Day Out | Exploring Buses at the Museum 🚌

A small but decent museum, although rather lacking in variation sadly giving it only four stars instead of five. Mostly old buses, some you can enter, some you can't. Would appreciate a more in depth history of Manchester's Metrolink, which would help it live up to the name 'Museum of Transport' rather than 'Museum of Buses' which is what it actually is. Took me 45 minutes to look round, which is generous, but is definitely worth a visit if you haven't been before. I last went in 2008 and this was my first visit since, and nothing had changed in all those years, so perhaps one to try once and then go elsewhere. The main reason for 4/5 is the cafe, some nice grub and tea/coffee but the prices blow you away! The one thing that hasn't changed since 2008 is the cafe prices, £2.40 for a Latte and a Toasted Teacake with butter... worth the entry fee just for that! At 80p, the toasted teacake here is cheaper than buying some from Tescos! I'm still in awe a day later at those prices, what a surprise! Definitely worth a visit therefore, for a cheap cuppa if nothing else...

This was a lovely place to visit with a pre-school age child. There are a range of buses in 2 large warehouse-sized rooms, many of which you can get onto. For slightly older children, there is an area with old style offices and plenty of information to read as you go around. The cafe is small and basic but very good value - as is the entry fee at only £5 for adults. It is pretty bus-focused, though there is also one metrolink tram (the original prototype I think). The only drawback really is the parking - there wasn't any space initially outside and the surrounding roads aren't ideal to park on. There is a larger car park at the nearby Manchester Fort retail park though I think strictly you're only meant to park there whilst shopping.

I give it 4 stars for effort and the fact my son loves it. But really it should be 2 stars! Possitive: Lots of busses to climb on, good fun to explore. Even a tram to get on. Only £4 entry fee. Negitive: only 2 big halls in a leeky bus shed. Takes about 1 hour to explore. Very dirty and cold! Not the most informative place. When you compare this place to other transport museums like York or Glasgow (which are free!) And how they have has big modernization and lovely things to explore it puts this place to shame! Come on Salford/Manchester council! Give this place some money and maybe a new building!!!

Been in Manchester 10 years and finally visiting this museum. It's a great little place for bus enthusiasts or anyone interested in the bus and tram history of Manchester. The only downside is that it is just really busses and trains. For a Transport museum I was expecting a bit more, which is why I've gave 4 stars instead of 5. But all in all its a good way to spend a couple of hours. Plenty to see, plenty to learn and you can even go inside some of the buses as well. Remember to look up when you are inside as there is lots of cool signs and stuff all around the room which you could easily miss.

Love this place. Its small but with plenty of buses crammed in and a bit of a tram t68 but unfortunately the cab is no longer fully kitted out. You can go in most of the buses and go upstairs. It's expensive for what it is as you're only in there for an hour at the most. My kids also cost me a fortune by wanting a bunch of model buses in the gift shop! It was virtually dead when i went during the week too and has a nice old style feel to the place with an old cafe for refreshments. Would highly recommend if you needed to kill an hour and wanted to see the history of public transport.
