A great place to visit and get reminded of the former international importance of this now poor, dreary and forgotten little town. Hopefully the promise of much-needed and deserved inward investment/development will help to reverse the decline in the fortunes of this Cumbrian community. The Heritage Centre/Museum is extremely informative and full of interesting industrial history. Furthermore, the volunteer staff are very helpful and enthusiastic. Allow 2-3 hours for your visit: it's also a wonderful place to shelter if a rainy day,(of which we have many here in Cumbria!),threatens to spoil your visit to this area. Whilst in the vicinity, and on a fine day,(of which we have few here in Cumbria!), don't miss the opportunity to walk along the outer sea defences near Haverigg Marine Village and to visit the nearby Millom Rock Park at Gill Scaugh Quarry. We had to add a comment on their Facebook page to ask when they're open, as the messenger seemed to be disabled. There is quite alot in here to see and a good memory wall for the fallen soldiers from the area. Advise to take your time and not rush around otherwise it would be a quick visit. Car park is free and there is a coffee shop. Would have preferred some millom or area linked gifts rather than squidgy toys sweets and other pound land goods, but hey ho.
