Spectacularly iconic and prominent historic site documenting one of the most historical battles in British History, which changed the course of Britain as we know it and certainly more than meets expectations for a being a memorable excellent day out matching that of the place itself. There are a number of things to see throughout the site including the Abbey Gatehouse, The Abbey, The Battlefield and The Visitor Centre and all of which are fantastic. Visitors can also obtain an audio tour from reception, which is very informative and useful providing some intriguing and fascinating about why the Battle of Hastings took place and the Battle itself and the intimate details of how William the Conqueror defeated King Harold adding to the wonder of the visit. Everything you walk around this place you sense and feel how it has a special place in British History and how special it is and get a clear idea and envision how the Battle of Hastings took place. The Visitor Centre houses an interesting exhibition about the Battle itself and how it was started and there is a lovely fascinating video about it and also you can see the Armour the soldiers would have worn during the battle and also the weapons used giving you a further interesting insight into it. The Abbey itself is outstanding and is one of the best examples in the UK of an Abbey originating from the Norman times showing the remarkable condition it is for its times. The Abbey has a number of features to see such as The Chapter House, The Novice Room, East Range & Domitory. The Novice Room is far by the most breathtaking features of the Abbey due its amazing architecture such as The Pillars and the Vaulted Ceilings. Visitors can also climb up to the Dormitory and enjoy some wonderful panoramic views of the rest of the site. In the Abbey you can see the remains of The Chapter House, which is sadly very little but you can get a clear idea of what it was like for Monks living at the Abbey. Visitors can wander onto the Battlefield itself and enjoy beautiful views towards the Abbey and Undercroft along with the Abbey School and whilst on the Battlefield you can gain a clear insight of how it was fought and how William defeated Harold and have time to take of the true key events of British History. The Walk along the terrace you can also enjoy views picturesque views back towards the Battlefield and The Woodland behind it. In the Abbey Gatehouse you can climb the steps to the top and enjoy spectacular views of the town of Battle and the surrounding area and also in the Abbey Gatehouse you can see some interesting artefacts such as Abbey Masonry with some wonderful inscriptions and features and also some pottery, which is in phenomenal condition considering its age. There is also some interesting displays about the Norman Legacy in Britain and the Monks life at Battle Abbey and more facts a about Battle Abbey, which is very interesting and you can see a replica of an Exchequer table and see a replica of the Battle Abbey Sword. There is a cafe selling a great range of refreshments at reasonable prices and also there is a shop selling a brilliant range of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is an extremely great and memorable place to visit which makes for a very memorable and enjoyable day out to see and gain some knowledge and perspective of one of the greatest battles in British History. Definitely well worth a visit whilst in the...

Battle Abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings. Managed by English Heritage, it's worth getting an annual membership for entry, and free parking nearby. (Use your membership card to validate the parking.

The entrance to the site is through the main gate house. Once inside, you can see an independent school which uses some of the rebuilt buildings.

There is a footpath made of small pebble chippings, and it's not too difficult to walk on. The footpath around the site is quite lengthy; however there are quite a number of benches along the longest section, so it's not too bad for those with reduced mobility.

There is a great cafe, and an exhibition room just a short distance from the gatehouse. There are both inside and outside tables, excellent food and drink, and some very clean toilets.

The footpath that runs along the rear of the site allows you to look down the hill towards the area where the Norman forces lined up before charging up the hill to attack the Saxon shield wall, just a short way back from the footpath. It looks quite steep, and it must have been an extremely challenging attack, even for fit and healthy soldiers.

There are a number of buildings that were part of the Abbey that visitors can enter. Only a few have any information, but it's still worth exploring to help understand what life might have been like.

It's also possible to see the site where it is believed an altar was constructed as part of the initial Abbey buildings, to commemorate the death of Harold Godwinson by William the Conqueror.

I would advise asking for one of their audio guide units; they are very easy to use, and provide some really valuable insight that supplements the many signboard.

I found it to be a truly interesting and enjoyable visit, despite the rather...

A Brilliant Day Out at Battle Abbey, Hastings

Nestled in the historic town of Battle near Hastings, Battle Abbey is an absolute treasure trove of English heritage. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the weight of history in the air — it’s not just a day out, it’s a journey back to one of the most pivotal moments in British history: the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The site is beautifully preserved, and English Heritage have done a fantastic job of blending education with atmosphere. Walking through the grounds where William the Conqueror defeated King Harold feels genuinely awe-inspiring. The abbey ruins themselves are hauntingly beautiful, with plenty of signage and interactive displays to bring the past vividly to life.

The visitor centre is modern, informative and well-curated, with a film and exhibitions that set the scene perfectly. For families, there’s a brilliant audio tour — engaging for kids and adults alike — and a range of fun activities during school holidays.

The battlefield walk is a highlight. Standing on the very hill where the fate of England was decided gives you a real sense of perspective. The surrounding countryside is serene, making it hard to believe such a fierce battle once took place there. It's also a great spot for taking photos or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll.

Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the site. The café offered decent refreshments, and the gift shop is stocked with quality souvenirs and books for history lovers.

Whether you're a history buff, a curious traveller, or looking for a unique day out with the family, Battle Abbey is a must-visit. It's atmospheric, educational, and thoroughly enjoyable. An unforgettable experience that truly brings 1066 to life.

5 stars – Highly...
