Rothiemurchus Trout Fishery
I had a terrible visit to this fishery yesterday, I took my 4 year old great nephew fishing for the first time on a family day out On arrival at the fishery i was told it was £10 per hour to fish the 2 small kids area ponds, which lets you take one fish home,I thought this would be perfect for him, so we got a permit, we fished alongside 10 other people all of whom never even saw a fish let alone caught one, as a experienced angler I knew fairly quickly there was no fish in the 2 small ponds, as we had paid to take a fish home, we went over the the main pond which is fly only, so I rigged up a bubble and fly for the 4 year old and helped him cast it out, after a few cast the assistant manageress came and told us we cannnot fish here as it is fly only, I told her I knew this, but there was zero fish in the 2 little ponds and we were just trying to get the little guy a fish, “which we had already paid for” I told her there was no fish in the 2 ponds, she first said, yes there was fish in them as it had been stocked that morning, at this point we just started to leave just after a hour or so off fishing as there was no point in fishing a pond that has no fish in it, as all 11 people fishing had still not caught or even seen any sign of a trout As I left I spoke to the girl again, she then told me due to a staff shortage the ponds had not been stocked, so I was right there was no fish in them, I asked for a refund, based on this, she refused and said she was not authorised to do, so we left fishless and we’ll out of pocket with a very disappointed 4 year old who had been looking forward to his trip, This place is a joke they took several hundred pounds of people to fish here today in a pond that they admit has no fish in it, this is not just immoral but probably illegal and fraudulent This used to be a good fishery but now run like this I will not be back and strongly advise others not to go unless you want to pay a lot of money to fish in a pond with...
Read moreI've not fished for over 45 years... and have always wanted to learn how to do it properly. The booking system for the fishing lessons here online is very easy to use by the way, plus if you don't need any tuition, you can just roll up and pay on the day. You can hire everything you need.
I booked for a three hour session - ÂŁ75 - and it was well worth it. I got over an hour of one to one tuition from Jamie, who is a good teacher, and a great fisher in his own right. You're taught how to tie on, and then cast. It's not as easy as it looks!
I then had two hours of solo fishing where I could make all my mistakes in private, but gradually worked it all out. As I'd caught nothing, Donald took me to another part of the fishery, and helped me net my first fly caught Rainbow trout. Basically, he said I wasn't allowed home till I'd landed a catch, and if I needed to come back after lunch and keep trying, I could.
Jamie and Donald couldn't have been more helpful, and I thank them both.
My wife brought up some lunch, we picknicked by the water in the glorious sunshine, and I went home very happy. The wee trout in the pics? Back in the water, hoping the resident Ospreys...
   Read moreExcellent day fishing here.
The 2 guys are very friendly and went through the equipment and although I had fished previously it had been many years so was grateful for the instructions.
The ponds were not overly busy and between the 2 of us we caught & released 6 fairly decent sized rainbows in the 1st pond and seen everyone around us who was bait fishing also catch in both the other ponds.
There is an option to fly fish on the larger ponds further back, we walked round and seen one of the guys catch an 8lbs blue trout and another a 5lbs rainbow.
Well worth a visit, great couple of hours spent here. Also seen some people with dogs, I think as long as they are under control and not in the water they are allowed.
Will definatly be back next time we are...
