Fantastic visit today, very informative and interesting. The museum and tour were reasonably priced, and I'm happy I also purchased a guide book, which I have enjoyed reading. In particular, the staff were terrific. When I arrived I approached to ask about accessibility - I use a walking stick due to issues with balance and mobility - and the two women were highly knowledgeable. They gave me a detailed description of what the tour involved, including how many stairs would be climbed, how many stops would be made and where chairs could be found. I paid my entrance and decided to give it a go, and I'm so glad I did. It's not often I can manage things like this, and to have the support of two of the kindest, warmest and most welcoming women I have had the pleasure to meet was invaluable - I particularly appreciated them checking in with me to make sure I was managing. Very caring and thoughtful without being patronising, you'd be surprised how often people don't manage that dynamic! Overall I had a great experience, and I left with some new knowledge and a sense of...
Read moreSo we drove from Elgin all the way to Fraserburgh to visit this museum. We checked Visit Scotland's website for opening hours, also Google and the museum's own site. According to them this museum is open every day throughout the year. It definitely is NOT. There is a large notice board by the entrance that shows it opens during the summer season. On the museum website it is very confusing about opening times and depending on how you read it, you will think it is open every day. It does NOT open during the winter months on Mondays and Tuesdays with different times for winter and summer. It seems the trust have failed to check any of their details against the biggest websites i.e. Visit Scotland and Google who even now as I post this, still show the museum as opening all year, every day. As we were stupid enough to turn up on a Tuesday it was shut so a 120+ mile round trip...
Read moreI was enthralled by this museum! The static exhibits are brilliantly explained and really tell the story of Scottish lighthouses through the ages. However, the star of the show has got to be our guide Michael, who demonstrated a such a fantastic wealth of knowledge of the Northern Lighthouse Board, and lighthouses generally, it was hard not to be impressed. He spoke in such a way that everyone felt they could ask him anything and of course he knew the answers! The tour of the lighthouse is spectacular; there are numerous stairs to walk up, including basically a ladder, so appropriate shoes and attire are recommended. It was great to see the rotating lens and associated mechanism, and learn about the day to day life of a lighthouse operator and their families. I was really happy I went, and would go again if I am...
