This really is a fantastic and magnificent museum in the heart of Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The museum is also very informative and extremely interesting and fascinating and tells the story of a former Roman Site Fort on the edge of Melrose in the village of Newstead called Trimontium in great enthralling interesting detail. Although the museum may be small it still makes for a great visit with an array of amazing artefacts to see ranging from Armour, Helmets, Swords, Coins, Pottery and Animal Bones. All of the artefacts considering their age are absolutely magnificent condition and the museum has one of the best conditioned Roman Artefacts in the UK showing the diligence the staff do in preserving the collection for future generations. The staff are very friendly and very welcoming and give you an introduction about Trimontium which is very informative and extremely giving you a flavour of the museum and what you are about to see. There are two brilliant videos to see which are about the history of The Romans in Scotland and also about Trimontium and also Iron Age and Roman sites and the Borders area and both videos are both riveting and enthralling and full of fun interesting facts. All of the displays are laid out in an easy to understand and displayed magnificently so you can fully understand and marvel at what you see and also get a full idea about Trimontium and its artefacts. Another great thing to note is that from your visit to the Museum is that you get a great insight into The Romans involvement in Scotland and how they fared, which is really interesting . There is a shop which sells an excellent range of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is an outstanding and amazing place to visit which is gives an excellent insight into Roman Scotland and also for an enthralling and interesting day out. Well worth a visit whilst visiting Melrose and the...
Read moreWe made a brief visit to this excellent museum earlier in June as part of a visit to Melrose. Extremely impressed - very friendly front-of-house team, high quality of presentation and layout, two very good introductory films (about the Romans in Britain, and Iron Age Scotland), fascinating exhibits. We also booked separately a guided walking tour of the Roman Fort site - we decided on the shorter version, starting from the nearby village of Newstead, lasting about an hour and a half. This too was really good, led by our enthusiastic and informative guide Geraldine, and gave a real sense of what this pretty large and significant Roman site would have been like in its heyday. (There are a good number of information panels around the site, but probably not easy to find them all on your own.) Our museum tickets are valid for a year, so we'll be back for a further visit next time we're in the...
Read moreA wonderful mixture of ancient local artefacts and modern interactive displays. The staff were very welcoming and it was highly engaging for my 9 year old son, who loved placing the votive offerings and spotting all the playmobile Romans. I am pleased that they have supplemented the collection of local finds with others in better states of preservation as it helps to bring the history alive. You can really imagine what I must've been like for an Imperial Cavalry soldier to live in the bleak and hostile lands north of the wall. The toilets were clean and spacious and the movie was well made and engaging. Easily more than an hour, perhaps longer if you take your time. You could make a day of it if you also take a guided tour of the actual site of Trimontium, which is on the edge of town. We could see it's outlines from the top of the...
