Underrated places in the UK, Part 4. You can get the train from London to St Albans from £11 and the journey on a fast train is just 18 minutes. It’s a great day trip idea if you love lovely restaurants, independent shops, quaint houses and fascinating history. If I was planning a day there it would look as follows: - A breakfast and coffee pastry at @thepuddingstop - Walk to the @stalbanscathedral with said coffee for a visit - Head to town to do some shopping - Off to lunch at the famous @wafflehousestalbans - Take a walk through Verulanium Park - Visit the Hypocaust for free - Head to @sopwellhouse if you are planning to stay overnight #stalbans #stalbanslife #visitherts #countrysidelife #countrysideliving #townandcountry #ukfamilytravel #placestovisit #placestovisituk #historictown #suitcasetravels #sheisnotlost #ukgetaway #uktravels #visitengland #lovegreatbritain #englandsbigpicture #allwhatsbeautiful #stayandwander #markettown #cathedral #daytripfromlondon Cute day trips from London | Cheap day out in the UK | Places to visit with kids | Day day idea in the UK

Visited St. Albans today on our way home after staying the night in the Hemel Hempstead the night before. Stumbled across the Cathedral on our way back to our car. I'm not qualified to give a detailed assessment, but what I will say is that it's a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. It's a pity we didn't have enough time to stay long and really take it all in. As it was a Sunday afternoon with the weather being what it was (22 December 2024), it wasn't as busy as it could've been. It's not a complaint, just an observation, which meant it did not feel crowded at any stage during our short visit. I wouldn't say it's the most beautiful cathedral I've seen on the inside, but it certainly has a very unique history and charm I did not know about or appreciate until we visited. It's well maintained and a real gem in St. Albans. I intend to read up more about Saint Alban and how the Cathedral evolved to what it is today. If you enjoy Cathedrals or simply love history, architecture, or visiting for spiritual reasons, you'll not be disappointed. It has something to offer everyone. It's free to enter and enjoy, but do consider giving a donation, as it helps keep it free, accessible to all, and also assists with essentials such as upkeep and maintenance, etc. Every little helps. You can give cash or donate electronically via contactless payments. I do recommend a visit to St. Albans Catherdral (inside and outside - the grounds are lovely) when finding yourself in St. Albans or in the vicinity. I give it 4.5 stars. We plan to return in the new year for a more substantial visit. I include a few pictures, but do keep in mind that seeing and experiencing this ancient and spiritual site and its rich history is better than any image shared.

In short: A Welcoming Oasis on the Ver Valley Walking Route As we embarked on the final leg of our walk from the Sopwell Valley, we found ourselves climbing a hill towards the city proper. Tucked away off the main road, the cathedral is an unmistakable landmark, drawing a steady stream of tourists. The entrance was bustling with activity, yet the serene gardens and meticulously maintained graveyard outside offered a peaceful retreat. A magnificent, ancient tree stood proudly near the entrance, adding to the site’s historical charm. Upon entering the cathedral, we were warmly greeted by the staff, with the café and restaurant conveniently located immediately to the left. While the prices were a bit steep, we were more than happy to indulge, especially since our dog was welcomed inside. This dog-friendly policy was a delightful surprise and a major highlight of our visit. Inside the cathedral, we discovered a treasure trove of educational opportunities. Historical plaques brimming with information provided deep insights into the building's storied past, while stunning displays of architecture and art showcased the medieval period's rich legacy. The vibrant stained glass windows were particularly impressive, adding to the cathedral's artistic allure. The best part? Admission was free, which is always a welcome bonus in my book. My children were captivated by the cathedral's grandeur, and I am truly grateful to the management for preserving and sharing this gem with visitors—both human and canine. In summary, this cathedral is not just a historic marvel but also a welcoming haven for those exploring the Ver Valley. A must-visit spot for families and their furry companions!

A Magical Experience at St Albans Cathedral Visiting St Albans Cathedral is always a treat, but my recent visit was nothing short of extraordinary. Currently, the Cathedral is hosting the “Museum of the Moon” exhibition by renowned artist Luke Jerram, and it is absolutely breathtaking. The detailed, illuminated moon sculpture hanging in the heart of the Cathedral is mesmerizing. Seeing it in this stunning, historic setting made the experience feel both otherworldly and deeply spiritual. The interplay of light, shadow, and the grand architecture enhances the artwork beautifully, creating an atmosphere of wonder and reflection. Beyond the exhibition, the Cathedral itself is a treasure. Its rich history, magnificent stained glass, and serene ambiance make it one of the most awe-inspiring places in the UK. The staff and volunteers are warm, knowledgeable, and eager to share the story of this remarkable place. Whether you’re coming for the art, the history, or simply a moment of peace, St Albans Cathedral is a must-visit. If you can, catch Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon” before it moves on—it’s a magical experience you won’t forget.

The last time that I had visited the cathedral was when I was at primary school, a long, long time ago. During the half term break we went to St Albans. This was at the back end of storm Dennis, when it was still very windy but at least it was dry. The town centre is situated on a hill as is the cathedral. Please bear this in mind if you take small children who like to be carried. Fortunately, my lot had grown up. The cathedral is free to visit (although they suggest a small voluntary charge). Inside, there is beautiful stone architecture. The history of the cathedral is explained on both a wall tapestry and a contemporary video screen. There is a cafe for light refreshment and a cathedral souvenir shop. It was well worth the visit. Down the hill there is a park area with a small lake and adjacent stream. There is a cafe too. Situated in the parkland are the remains of a Roman settlement. We had parked in the town and walked down to all this, so had to walk uphill at the end of the day. We found out that there is a car park at the park, which would have been better for us. Overall, it was a lovely visit to the cathedral and the town.

Great cathedral in the centre of this wonderful city, there are guides that take you on a tour roughly an hour in length. Check times of the tours with the help desk manned by friendly staff. Great sounding organ from 1962 that was recently refurbished. They have concerts in the cathedral on various dates during the year, please check St Albans Cathedral website. The usual services during the week and weekends taking place in the mornings, midday and early evening. Great cafe serving lunch, cakes and tea or coffee, and a wonderful shop for gifts or to treat yourself. I adore this Cathedral and always go there whenever I am in St Albans. Please visit this wonderful Cathedral and support it by giving some of your loose change or donate whatever amount with a contactless card. Light a candle or write a message on a card and post it on the board, maybe it will be read out at a service. Go to a service to experience the spiritual wellbeing and sing a few songs with the congregation.
