Visited St. Albans today on our way home after staying the night in the Hemel Hempstead the night before. Stumbled across the Cathedral on our way back to our car.
I'm not qualified to give a detailed assessment, but what I will say is that it's a lot bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. It's a pity we didn't have enough time to stay long and really take it all in. As it was a Sunday afternoon with the weather being what it was (22 December 2024), it wasn't as busy as it could've been. It's not a complaint, just an observation, which meant it did not feel crowded at any stage during our short visit. I wouldn't say it's the most beautiful cathedral I've seen on the inside, but it certainly has a very unique history and charm I did not know about or appreciate until we visited. It's well maintained and a real gem in St. Albans. I intend to read up more about Saint Alban and how the Cathedral evolved to what it is today.
If you enjoy Cathedrals or simply love history, architecture, or visiting for spiritual reasons, you'll not be disappointed. It has something to offer everyone. It's free to enter and enjoy, but do consider giving a donation, as it helps keep it free, accessible to all, and also assists with essentials such as upkeep and maintenance, etc. Every little helps. You can give cash or donate electronically via contactless payments.
I do recommend a visit to St. Albans Catherdral (inside and outside - the grounds are lovely) when finding yourself in St. Albans or in the vicinity. I give it 4.5 stars.
We plan to return in the new year for a more substantial visit. I include a few pictures, but do keep in mind that seeing and experiencing this ancient and spiritual site and its rich history is better than any...

As we embarked on the final leg of our walk from the Sopwell Valley, we found ourselves climbing a hill towards the city proper. Tucked away off the main road, the cathedral is an unmistakable landmark, drawing a steady stream of tourists. The entrance was bustling with activity, yet the serene gardens and meticulously maintained graveyard outside offered a peaceful retreat. A magnificent, ancient tree stood proudly near the entrance, adding to the site’s historical charm.
Upon entering the cathedral, we were warmly greeted by the staff, with the café and restaurant conveniently located immediately to the left. While the prices were a bit steep, we were more than happy to indulge, especially since our dog was welcomed inside. This dog-friendly policy was a delightful surprise and a major highlight of our visit.
Inside the cathedral, we discovered a treasure trove of educational opportunities. Historical plaques brimming with information provided deep insights into the building's storied past, while stunning displays of architecture and art showcased the medieval period's rich legacy. The vibrant stained glass windows were particularly impressive, adding to the cathedral's artistic allure.
The best part? Admission was free, which is always a welcome bonus in my book. My children were captivated by the cathedral's grandeur, and I am truly grateful to the management for preserving and sharing this gem with visitors—both human and canine.
In summary, this cathedral is not just a historic marvel but also a welcoming haven for those exploring the Ver Valley. A must-visit spot for families and their...
Read moreA Magical Experience at St Albans Cathedral
Visiting St Albans Cathedral is always a treat, but my recent visit was nothing short of extraordinary. Currently, the Cathedral is hosting the “Museum of the Moon” exhibition by renowned artist Luke Jerram, and it is absolutely breathtaking.
The detailed, illuminated moon sculpture hanging in the heart of the Cathedral is mesmerizing. Seeing it in this stunning, historic setting made the experience feel both otherworldly and deeply spiritual. The interplay of light, shadow, and the grand architecture enhances the artwork beautifully, creating an atmosphere of wonder and reflection.
Beyond the exhibition, the Cathedral itself is a treasure. Its rich history, magnificent stained glass, and serene ambiance make it one of the most awe-inspiring places in the UK. The staff and volunteers are warm, knowledgeable, and eager to share the story of this remarkable place.
Whether you’re coming for the art, the history, or simply a moment of peace, St Albans Cathedral is a must-visit. If you can, catch Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon” before it moves on—it’s a magical experience you...
