When I tell my mates where to go for drinks this is the first place that comes to mind! Where else can you go that is as versatile as Slug and Lettuce St Albans, in one day without getting off my feet I can be at brunch with the girlies, then afternoon tea with my nan, have a first date with a sweet one come early evening, cocktails with the lads after, then by night it turns into the hottest late night place in St Albans.. I mean talk about versatile.
What amazes me about Slug and Lettuce St Albans is how the decor alone can put a smile on my face! Walking in you notice the sign up top with its subtle beauty encompassing raised sage lettering contrasted by that eggshell white background. Inside thereâs hardware features such as the dark walnut tables and Art Deco tiled flooring that flows naturally into the bare brick walls. Everything from wall to wall has been carefully thought about from the industrial style light fittings to the brass door handles and finials, Slug and Lettuce St Albans strikes the fine balance between classy nouveau riche opulence and eccentric chic.
Behind every great business is the staff, the backbone of any operation and the staff here are first class. I always tip heavy when I come here because my needs are always attended to. When people ask me who my bar man is, all I tell them is that my bar man is the best in the UK and that alone letâs people know who it is! He goes by the name of Joe Weaver.. some say his singles taste like doubles and his doubles taste like quadruples but thatâs just because his smile alone is intoxicating. Iâve never seen someone pour such a perfect drink from the martinis to the zombies he can do them all. He marshals the bar like a sergeant major with his wide frame, chiselled face and manly voice. I have a nickname for Joe and that is Mr C, that stands for Mr Composure because when heâs behind that granite top bar there is not a dry mouth or angry frown in the whole of Slug and Lettuce St Albans! New or regular, big or small, old or young (18+ only) heâll serve them all and get a tip in return. His quick flair and effervescent personality really shows why heâs the best bar man in the UK and why punters alike would be foolish to not give Slug and Lettuce St...
Read moreThe place itself is lovely, but the staff is probably the worst I've ever seen in life! My friend and I are both mums, we finally had a night out with no kids and we wanted to fully enjoy it, but unfortunately we choose this place and it was a big disappointment. One of the bartender was so unpleasant, rude, serious, that we decided to talk to another one, who had a brighter appearance but was not much better. My friend and I went to talk to them, asking some advice; at first for a whole minute the girls kept talking to each other, like they couldn't see us, and we were standing in front of them, with poker faces on. We wanted to know if the "2 for 1" offer worked at that time, and because she said yes we ordered directly there 2 piña coladas. The menu stated the piña colada was served in a beautiful and funny golden pinapple, but instead they served us out cocktails in very sad normal glasses. We also asked if we could sit down, but she told us no, to wait there for our drinks. The place was half empty, so it's not that they were really busy. When we went to sit down with our cocktails, the couple sitting in front of us was served at the table with 2 piña coladas in that golden pinapple. So I ordered 2 more piña coladas from the app and finally they served us on the table and with the 2 golden pinapples. It makes me wonder if the second order was better because it was anonymous? Was it personal the way they treated us from the very start? My friend and I are really smiling people, so it wasn't surely because of our attitude. Shame then, I'll never go back. Luckily we found a better place as soon as we left and we had a lovely evening out anywayđ
Edit: I called the number after 11 mins the reply was posted; the girl answering the phone didn't even know what I was talking aboutđ€Ł I asked then to talk to the manager and the guy too didn't know what to say. He apologized in a very uncomfortable way and said he would have sent me an email with something to fix the situation, but of course never came back to me. The father of the chain "Slug and Lettuce" shouldn't be...
Read moreI recently visited Slug and Lettuce St Albans for a bottomless brunch with some friends. Admittedly, we had booked a table of 9 and later realised we should have booked for 11. We spoke to the staff when we arrived for our booking and apologised whilst explaining our mistake. We explained that the table was perfect and that all we needed was two extra chairs. We didnât think that this wouldâve been such an unreasonable request. Instead of understanding, we were met with irritable and frankly rude staff. We were told that they had run out of chairs and due to them being âfully bookedâ, we were unable to take any from one of the many EMPTY tables. We were eventually given 1 chair that they had found, but told that the other person would have to stand. We attempted to politely offer multiple solutions to staff who were, again, having none of it. We ended up taking a chair from a table that wasnât being used (and wasnât used for the whole duration of our booking). Our brunch was set to start at 3 however as our full party hadnât yet arrived, we were told our brunch could be pushed back by 10 minutes and that this was not a problem, so we agreed. Only to be given the bill at 4:55 rather than the agreed 5:10. When we raised the question as to why our brunch had been finished 15 minutes early, we were told that they had made us aware that we would miss out on the 10 minutes. This was not made aware to us. I asked to speak to a manager (not something I took any enjoyment in) who said that as she wasnât there for our conversation, she was going to agree with her staff and close our tab. The staff couldnât have been less accommodating if they had tried which unfortunately left our group frustrated and completely opposed to spending any more money in there. As previously said the staff were rude, irritable, had poor manners such as rolling their eyes anytime we had a question and ultimately seemed to have no training in customer service. Overall, it was an incredibly...
