Nice leafy and very quiet course with a real mix of hole lengths. 7 par 3s and 2 par 4s. The location is great for St Albans as otherwise you are having to go to Redbourn for 9 holes and that is a 30 minute round trip.
2 hours of free parking covers the whole round. Greens are generally pretty good condition.
There are a few issues. The fairways are narrow and there isn't much of a rough to speak of. If you don't hit it straight it's a lost ball or you might even hit it onto a neighbouring hole. You need to keep your wits about you to if people are playing the other way (hole 2&3 and hole 1&9 are most at risk for this).
There are a lot of walkers and dog walkers about. Moreso than other golfers.
There are no tee areas, just tee mats and they are really not in great condition. A practice swing and the clubhead comes away covered in mud.
The round is cheap if you can wait for a PM tee time. I wouldn't do an early morning time as it costs the same as Redbourn which is a better maintained and landscaped course and also has better practice facilities (driving range, chipping area and...
Read moreWonderful facility for all runners in St Albans! The track was relaid with the latest materials in 2019 and is fast, springy and in excellent condition. The views whilst running are very pleasant: trees on one side, Verulamium Park and St Albans Abbey to the other. The track is open to the public unless being used by the local schools or running club, and is usually very quiet. Best to call up in advance to check usage. When not being used by a school or running club, the cost per visit is about £4 or free if you have monthly membership at Batchwood OneLife Sports Centre. There's also a huge car park (search for Westminster Lodge) within a moment's walk offering free parking for up to 2 hours. I love coming here to do speed work. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to give track...
Read moreGood course, with amazing views. The view down the 7th and 9th holes are just amazing!
Lots of simple par 3s and a short par 4 to open. Hole 8, a par 4, can be a real challenge, nice work!
Greens certainly need some love, and maybe have rubber tees built into the mats? Could also do with some better sign posting between holes, some tee boxes aren't where you'd expect.
A chipping net would be awesome to warm up.
Watch out for ramblers, dog walkers, and even the odd cyclist going over fairways! Not the usual golf hazards, but they are present.
Main complaint is the online prices shown when booking are ALWAYS lower that the price you'll pay when you arrive at the course. Often 25-50% more than the...
