Booked for the 2pm train on Easter Saturday, £15.00 per person Arrived at 1.30 pm it was quiet and unwelcoming. Checked on at the booking office to be told there's only you and another couple on the train. Oh well we thought, more space for us to choose. We boarded the train carriage to find rubbish on the floors and empty cups on some tables. We found a seat and sat waiting for the train to depart. We had no interaction with staff (volunteers) who walked up and down the carriage looking tatty and u presentable in ill fitting uniforms. Off we went on the journey, the train appeared to struggle pulling the carriages and we juddered along for most of the journey before finally stopping when we saw the train turn and hook up for our return to the station. We had barely got going and the ride was terrible. Onwards back to the station and we left feeling shortchanged and dissapointed. Last year we went on the churnet valley track and this was so much better. Now I know this is all voluntary and hats off to the people involved but please at least try to make the experience more interesting, we heard the other passenger say what we said we've only gone past two fields and seen nothing but trees. Also, your google opening times said you were shut Saturday which may have had an effect on the poor volume of people using the train. I'm an avid fan of anyone who volunteer and enjoy what is probably their hobby and I'm sure it's an expensive set up to run, but please try harder go and see how the guys at Churnet Valley do it. Maybe we went at the wrong time on the wrong day, but first Impressions and all that won't get me to return. Sorry and sorry for the...
Read moreWhat a lovely place! Foxfield is much more than just a train ride, it gives you the complete experience of travelling by rail in earlier times. The station buildings, buffet cafe and museum with locomotives all contribute to this. The volunteers are obviously devoted, hard working and are smiley and welcoming. We ordered a picnic lunch to go to eat en route. The train itself was truly amazing, shining wood and that air of permanence that you just don't get any more. The ride, as others have said could have been longer but the museum ambience and general atmosphere did make up for that. Probably a great visit for children who can get bored on longer trips and there was a miniature train ride for £1 as well. Final note: our sat nav got totally confused and sent us up a tiny road that we didn't think could possibly lead to a railway as it looked like a private drive. There was no signage so we turned round and went back to Blythe station where a very helpful guy told us it is actually the correct road and to just continue where it narrows at the top. Coming from the other direction...
Read moreConverted to the Foxfield Railway for the Santa Train from Churnett Valley, wasn't sure what to expect but it was brilliant. The railway has lots more to look at including a museum with stationed trains inside which was fab to see the trains close. The train that we rode in was lovely, the windows could have done with wiping so to see the views while on the train ride. Santa and his helpers were very good, Jack Frost and Cracker the elf were really good and interacting with my family especially our youngest who really believes. Santa was a bit rushed and we thought he would have come in and sat with us like they do at Churnett Valley but we were the last carriage so maybe he was out of time but just thought he could have been a little more interactive with our youngest but she enjoyed speaking to him. Gifts were great off Santa Claus. All the staff were really pleasant and smiley All in all a great...
