I understand this is the only site in Europe where the medieval houses were re-built on the excavated foundation stones, all of which are clearly visible and were brought up by cart from the adjacent Lavernock Point Beach. Daily tours with a costumed guide run throughout the year (double check on line or phone the Cosmeston Country Park to avoid disappointment should the village be closed forany reason) and cost £5.00 per adult. You'll be transported to 1350, the year the Black Death reached Cardiff. The atmospheric thatched cottages, dimly lit by candles, are surrounded by beautiful herb and vegetable gardens, lovingly cared for staff and costumed volunteers from the local area. Not to be missed..a quite different experience to St. Fagin's the National Museum of Wales which is also a must-see destination. Cosmeston Medieval Village also provides costumed educational tours for school and student groups of all ages and nationalities, all of whom will take away unique memories of a magical part of...

The lake is free to visit, and the parking is free. There is a charge to visit the reconstruction of the medieval village on the site. The village was abandoned at the time of the Black Death and the remains only discovered in the 1970s. There are several buildings (with furnishings and contents) to visit as well as the small (not very wonderful) museum house (which also built on the remains of a medieval cottage). You can choose an audioguide to walk round with, but it's vastly better to book onto a guided tour. You are shown round by a village peasant, in costume, in character. You learn a lot, get insights from the peasant's point of view, get to ask questions and it costs you no extra over the admission fee. Each time we've done it, our party had the guide to ourselves. A whole hour for about a fiver: superb...

Cosmeston Medieval Village, sited within the boundaries of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, is one of the Vale of Glamorgan's leading tourist attractions. The Village is set in the year 1350, a turbulent period in the history of the Welsh and English. The remains of the community were discovered and excavated during the 1980's by a team of archaeologists, and the local authority decided that this was a unique opportunity to bring to life part of the history of Wales. A programme of reconstruction allows visitors to see excavated buildings and gardens recreated, while livestock of the middle ages are cared for by "villagers" in authentic costume. There is an opportunity to experience medieval life by taking a tour of the village with a costumed guide or you can take a self guided tour using the portable audio system.

What an absolutely wonderful adventure! It's like going back in time with a guide who makes the whole thing come alive. You have the sights, smells and sounds of the past as the guide, playing the role of a villager, takes you around the medieval village explaining what everything is, what it meant and how it shaped not only life 600 years ago but today as well. You'll see the connection between our comfortable lives today and the lives our ancestors lived, ancestors who braved the elements, the battles and The Plague. Seriously excellent, lots of fun, impressively informative (my wife, 6yr old daughter and I had all our questions answered with patient clarity) and worth every single penny. Ps.if you have kids who like Minecraft, they'll likely see a connection between that game and this medieval world.
