This was a brilliant museum to visit, with exhibits about the history of the Great Western trains across the Devon area. Info is shown regarding the integration of signalling on the network and there is a full scale signal on display, levers can even be pulled like one would do in a signal-box! Worker's gear is intriguing to see and old local rail items are preserved, including the holiday books showing good reason to visit Devon particularly. The model steam train was fabulous as was the atmospheric railway carriage that can even be pushed along using air in the replica, really interesting to know this used to run using salt air but became too pricey!

Small but well presented local museum situated in a renovated church at Newton Place. It is a short walk from the town centre and a local council pay and display car park is adjacent. The book of condolence was here to sign prior to the Queen's funeral, The museum featured very interesting local history and ex GWR railway items on display including signals and a lever frame from Newton Abbot West Junction signal Box. Local books and souvenirs were available as well as a reception desk and toilets. There is no charge for entry however there is a donation box if you wish to help the museum upkeep.

What a surprising visit! Our travel plans were canceled when we arrived in Newton Abbot so instead of waisting the trip I found this museum on Google and decided to walk in the rain to it. It was a lot of fun for the kids with a ton of history on the town and the rail line. I recommend taking the time to check it out as we spent a good deal of time looking and reading. They have interactive games and history hunts for the kids as well.

"NEWTON ABBOT GWR MUSEUM"..

Historic Artifacts, Time Lines, Documents, Art Works, Interactive Features..

From Iron Age Fortifications + Settlements to the Present Day..

Bright + Colourful Museum, restored to mint condition, so step back in time, an educative experience..

Did you know that a nurse from the local area joined the Russian Forces, was decorated for her efforts.?

Did you know of the wooden diving barrel that was used to precariously explore the sea bed.?

Did you know about the vacuum railway carriage created by Isambard Brunel, the great railway master.?

Did you know of the traumatic shell shock experienced by WW1 soldiers, taking 2/3 years for recovery.?

The Museum, complimented by the Mosaic Windows, Furnishings, Statues of the original Church..
