I'm giving it four stars because it's not often you have to wander through the grounds of a historic castle into a small shopping centre. There's a few interactive pieces and plenty of info for a little wander round, the upper parts were closed off so I can't speak for the whole experience of Carmarthen castle but it's interesting and there are more little nods to the towns history throughout its centre, with statues and mosaics mixed with TK Maxx and artisan coffee shops around the outside of the castle. There's plenty of parking for drivers, with train and bus stations within five to ten minutes walk for those who don't. It's worth fitting it into your full day of exploring but don't go thinking you need to dedicate hours to it because you'll be disappointed. The tourist information centre is situated in the castle grounds so you can find out what else you can discover and all...

It was closed. Do not drive in to the Country Hall parking Mon to Fri. It is only open to the public for pay to park on Sat and Sun. Unbeknown to us an elusive parking attendant decided to lower the restricted height gates 5mins after we arrived (6ft 3in) without double checking we were at the rear of the car park reading the sign (meter was covered with a plastic bag). This resulted in us being locked in as our car had a roof box on it. Resulted in an unnecessary delay as we had to call the number on the board and explain. A well meaning badged council member of staff said we would be okay to park until 4pm ish. It took some time for the parking attendant to reappear so we ended up removing the roof box, carrying it out / driving out and refitting it. Much to the amusement of many, including the attendant. Mr Ben, to magically reappear just as we...

A short uphill walk from train station. We had one hour wait for train connection and decided to go up to castle grounds. We did not go in the castle. You have a nice aerial view of surroundings. There are also informative placards. If you go from train station give enough time for the crosswalk you need to use. It’s an odd 4 point crosswalk and takes longer to wait for the green sign than it actually takes to walk up the hill. On the opposite side of castle there is a nice bricked plaza with shops and a nice place to take a drink if you have the time. If you are driving beware of limited parking. We were there mid week and noticed available parking spaces...

What a wasted opportunity! Carmarthen Castle could be an attractive focal point for the town — and to its credit, it does have plaques explaining what you're looking at, which many ruined castles don’t. But the whole place was filthy and felt completely neglected. It’s frustrating to see such a historic site treated like this. A bit of pride in the heritage and some basic upkeep would make a huge difference. Sadly, the same sense of filth and disregard was obvious in many of the main towns across South and South West Wales. Please note that the review below by another member showing a big castle is Caernarfon Castle, NOT Carmarthen Castle!
