Despite appearing to be a fortified building, it is a house built in the style of a large mansion with a large kitchen, bake house and dairy, billiard room, library, and a range of reception rooms. In addition, there is a brew house, icehouse and extensive storage cellars that used to contain over 15,000 individual bottles of wines and spirits such as Sherry, Champagne, Whiskey, Brandy, Madeira Wine, and over 7,500 bottles of port. you don't get to see all of this, Adjoining the building were also stable blocks and coach houses. The castle stands in 158-acre (64 ha) of parkland, now called Cyfarthfa Park and maintained by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. The park is listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. It's £2.30 to go inside the castle to see the art work and industrial history museum, but not much of the castle, so we didn't go inside, the park and gardens are great for walks and picnics, miniature railway, splash pad for the kids, and a nice...
Read moreOver the years castles, in general, have not caught my eye so I have rarely visited them. In preparing for this day out, I watched a video of THIS castle. My interest was instantly piqued. My first photo inside the building had to be of the ceiling's design of Yorkshire roses 🌹. Apologies to Yorkshire.... their rose is white. The Crayshaw family lived in Yorkshire centuries ago. Yorkshire borders the county I live in, hence the interest. It was a fascinating place to visit but it took me virtually an hour on foot from the train station to get there. In mitigation, I got many photos on the way. The photos I show are only from within the grounds of the Castle. As you will see I had a giggle within the museum before making my way out of the grounds and on to my next adventure.... There is only public access to less than half the building but it is well worth a visit. Views of the surrounding hills will be long remembered. For those on foot, the driveway up to the Castle is something like a...
Read moreVisited cyfartha castle with my mum , grandson & 3 nephews. What a beautiful place , great park , museum & The train ride is fab & the walks around the grounds are beautiful! . Staff all welcoming & helpful ! We also visited the tea rooms ! We went up to the top cafe by park. Ordered food & then to our horror this large bulldog came in without any owner & off a lead . Parents , grandparents immediately looked & shielded their children ,As the dog sniffed our bags & roamed around. I called the staff & they got him out & said he roams free & he’s from the gurnos. We were horrified a big dog in amongst children on school holidays , it was busy & very warm .I later seen the dog with a young man who worked there. Picking up litter around the splash area . It didn’t spoil our day but , this should be addressed any child could have pulled his tail. Or tried to call him. All animals should be on a lead & Especially. In a busy...
